UCLA Switch majors BioE to CSE

Hi, I was admitted into UCLA HSSEAS as a BioE major, but I would like to switch to CSE or maybe electrical or mechanical. I’d like to ask:

  1. Just how difficult to switch from BioE to another engineering major? I looked at the prep courses for each major and BioE only has Physics 4AL in common with CSE.
  2. Knowing that it is already difficult to get some of the classes you want at a large school like UCLA, how hard would it be to get the classes I need to petition for a major switch after the first two quarters?
  3. How hard is it to get a good GPA in the CSE prep courses I need to switch majors coming in with no prior coding experience at all?

Any personal experience switching out of BioE would be really helpful, but I’d just like any advice at all.

Thank you.

You have to wait at least 2 quarters, and you have to take CS 31 and 32 and do well in them (likely B’s or better) to have a shot. You shouldn’t have too hard a time getting the classes you need as long as you are flexible with class times and professors. The classes are difficult but if you work hard, then you’ll probably be okay. It’s easier to switch majors within HSSEAS than it is to come from the College.
