Switching to engineering?

Hello, everyone. My sister attends UCLA and is a chem major (Letters and Sciences).

Is it tough to switch to engineering? Is it just a matter of filing some paperwork and having a certain GPA or is it a more competitive process?

Thank you!

Depends on the major she wants. Just this year, HSSEAS started requiring a 3.5 in the “major prep” courses (math 31/32/33 series, Physics 1 series, Chem 20 series).

What would be involved in switching to the Computer Science major?

For UCLA students admitted as freshmen who are presently in a non-engineering major, outside of HSSEAS (e.g. Math) and attempting to change to a HSSEAS major (e.g. Civil Engineering):

you will need a minimum 3.5 grade point average in courses which are preparation* for the engineering major
*Required preparatory courses for all HSSEAS majors include:
MATH 31A, 31B, 32A, 32B, 33A, 33B, PHYSICS 1A, 1B, 1C and CHEM 20A.

Computer Science/Computer Science&Engr - CS 31 (restricted to ENGR major; L&S
students may enroll in PIC 10A and/or 10B), Math 61

Get the preqs done in a timely manner, because from what I know from my friends in CS, the major has a ton of classes.

Thank you so much! That’s very helpful!

So if I manage to complete all the prereqs with the 3.5+, are my chances pretty good of getting in?

Also, what about: “IF you are currently a freshman, you may request a change of major based on the following schedule: during your first year, you may apply after you have completed a minimum of two quarters, two required Mathematics courses, AND two other required courses (Chemistry, Physics or Life Science courses) at UCLA.”

Does that mean I can apply at the beginning of summer quarter, having taken maybe 32A+B and two of the sciences? (They say they review applications once per quarter, but does that still include summer quarter? And would I count as a second year by summer quarter? Maybe I’m just getting paranoid here. XD)

And, just to be clear, taking PIC 10A/B wouldn’t fulfill the “two other required courses” portion of that, correct?

Also, I have 48.5 credits from AP tests and CC courses. So, even though I’m a first year, I’m still technically listed as a sophomore credit-wise. So by freshman do they mean first years or students with under 45 credits to their name?

Oh! I also got a 5 in Calc BC. According to their AP credit thing ([AP Credit - School of Engineering and Applied Science - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/APCreditEN.htm)), for them that counts as 31A, right?

Does that mean I have to take 31B? L&S lets me skip right to 32A with that 5.

If I were able to take 32A (depending on what the answer above is), Chem 20A, and Physics 1A next quarter and do 3.5+ well, does that mean I could apply at the beginning of spring quarter? Or do they want me to take two math courses AT UCLA?

…I apparently have a lot of questions. And some of them seem like they’d be outside the range of general knowledge. Who should I talk to about this?

You have to take two math classes at UCLA. Skipped classes don’t count.
