Ucla switching majors as a freshman

Hi,

I am applying to UCLA as a Middle Eastern Studies major. I was wondering if I can switch majors when/if I get accepted? I possibly want to switch my major to psychology or possibly anything in the science department. Also, do I have to take specific classes before switching majors? If anyone knows if it is possible or what steps I have to take please let me know!

Your question begs the question of why you declared a major you do not intend to pursue. Aren’t you supposed to fill out your application with honest intentions?

Thank you for not answering my question, but to answer yours, I did fill out my application with honest intentions. As an incoming freshman, I want to experience and learn about different career paths in which my major plays a huge role. I am planning to stay in this current major but I am just trying to figure out my career goal and plans just like most freshmen. I just want to know my options.

You need to go to each major’s web site at UCLA to find out what the procedure is to declare the major. Usually, it means taking the prerequisite courses for the major. If the major is more popular than its department can handle, there may be a high college GPA requirement and/or competitive admission to get into the major.

For example, http://catalog.registrar.ucla.edu/ucla-catalog20-21-1230.html lists the requirements to declare the psychology major.

Thank you for your response, I appreciate it!

That actually doesn’t matter for L&S major choice is not a factor for admission. They admit to the school as a whole. For the majority of UCs any major in L&S is not an admit by major. Once at school you’ll have to complete pre reqs to get in the major. Many try the “bait and switch” tactic not realizing it did nothing to “increase chances”.

To the OP: if you get in, you can switch at orientation so your orientation counselor can help you plan your first quarter classes. Usually it’s 2 GEs and an English class if needed. Or 3 GEs.
