If accepted to UCLA as a Sociology major, WOULD it be possible to switch to Psychology? At orientation? With pre-reqs completed?

This is something you need to ask the school directly. However, the answer is likely to be no.

No, you need to be accepted as Psych major.

UCLA rarely lets you switch into impacted majors, which both appear to be. The only time you’re really allowed to switch into an impacted major is if you’re already taking a major in that department then it’s relatively easy as long as you’re in good standing at UCLA. Psychology and Sociology are in separate departments so it seems doubtful that you’d be able to switch into one from the other after you’ve been admitted. In terms of getting admitted they would appear to be equally as competitive as the average admitted GPA was 3.81 and 3.82 for pre-psychology and pre-sociology, respectively in 2011.

If your intent is to declare sociology on your UC application because it has a few less pre-reqs I think it’s a bad idea. In terms of pre-reqs both are pretty light and require mostly introductory courses with psychology requiring only a few more science courses. Either way, you’re probably going to end up taking those few extra courses when you complete your IGETC anyway, so it would seem to make sense to apply to it directly if that’s what you want to major in.
