UCLA TAP: A Sure Thing

i got in as a psych major (from another UC) and didnt complete the chem/phys requirement nor the stats/calc requirement

Double ouch. The moral: UCLA and Cal are never sure things.

Help… I’m very confused @__@‘’
So if I want to apply for UCLA by Nov 2011, do I have to complete ALL 15 honors units to be part of the TAP program by then D: ? Or do I have more time to complete those 15 units after I apply till Spring 2012?

I’m in a similar boat… I have about…100 units (or I will by the end of Winter) I’m applying with TAP to Psychology at UCLA. I’ll have all my units done, problem is I have some glaringly bad grades I have to fix… essentially, Fs in a history class and Spanish 1A I have to fix… and I had to take Stats 3 times to pass it (First time I got an F, took it online… computer glitched/broke/virus’ed 5 times before I finally just gave up, 2nd Time I kept getting sick cause I wasn’t used to 4-day a week college and all-nighters took a toll on my health, got a D). Anyway… Before you count my SBCC grades, my WVC grades are a 3.4, it’s those 3 Fs pulling it down. So I’m relying on the TAP to raise my chances after I run some grade-corrections. Thing is, with all 100 units (Including the 18 I’m taking now and the 1 unit I’m taking gaurenteed in the winter) my GPA on the TAG says 2.8 so I think they’re counting repeat and original and classes with grades I haven’t completed yet.

So bottom line (and sorry for hijacking the thread a bit) TAP will help, you just need to keep an upward grade trend, try to keep it at 3.5 and higher, do as many ECs as you can without overloading, write a great personal statement and hopefully you’ll get in (Acceptance is about 95%)

@sunny – You’re… applying this Fall so that you can go to UCLA by next Fall… correct? You have to have it done by Spring prior to Transfer, so you’d be completing the 15 units by Spring 2011 and going to UCLA in the Fall. Generally, you shoulda applied for TAP by now and gotten into the honors classes.

@itachirumon: thanks for ur fast reply lool :smiley: & no :open_mouth: I’m just a freshman, I’m planning to apply next fall (2011) to get try and get into the fall 2012 school year :open_mouth: sob ;_;

good luck in getting into UCLA :smiley: !

^Thanks~ On further inspection, it’s just the 3 Fs and the D killing my transcript, I can remove 1 F and hte D by passing Stats, and the 2 Fs through academic renewal (albeit at the end of next Spring) or by retaking History 100 and Spanish 100 (online courses, Spanish was mistaken to be a Go-At-Your-Own-Pace class and History was just hard to get into the groove for the quizes and discussion posts in the way he wanted). Just taking them OFF jumps my GPA to 3.18 (and that’s before the D so figure 3.2-3.25). Retaking them and getting As could jump my GPA back up to 3.5 range, if I get As this semester too my WVC GPA will be around 3.65, A’s in the Spring will boost it to 3.8… Figure even if it drops again to 3.5 with SBCC grades… you know, 118 units by then with a 3.5, 2 AA degrees and TAP… that should be enough

@sunnybaNANA - At City College of San Francisco they have a rule regarding when the honors units are completed and how many of them are completed. You can’t simply tell the honors coordinator that you are planning to take 15 units in the spring. I believe the rule is that you have to complete at least 6 of the units by the end of the Fall when you’re applying. You can put off 9 of them for the Spring.

For example, if you are applying for Fall 2011, you can take 6 units in the Fall of 2010 and then 9 units in the Spring of 2011. I did something like that. I actually never even finished my honors units but my admission to UCLA was not rescinded!

Don’t quote me on these figures. Talk to your school’s honors coordinator.

@Itachirumon - I had a bunch of bad grades like that too but at CCSF they have a program called “academic renewal” which allows you to erase bad grades from your transcript :slight_smile: Crazy huh? The rule is that the grades have to have occurred over 2 years ago, and you can only do “academic renewal” once. I did this back in 2006 so the rules might have changed by now. It saved my $@#!

Not many people know about this trick.
