This thread is regarding UCLA's Transfer Alliance Program (TAP). This program is offered at some California community colleges and to become TAP certified, students are usually required to take 15 honors units. Being TAP certified gives you "priority consideration for enrollment" to UCLA, but in other words, you're basically in for sure.

As long as you have your pre-reqs, over a 3.0, and finish IGETC, TAP is a sure thing, right?

Its not a guarantee, no. People have been rejected even with TAP. Typically that happens when they apply for an impacted major without having any of the prerequisites done, or having a very low GPA.

That said, the TAP acceptance rate is very high, generally somewhere between 80% and 95%; this varies depending on the CCC. Your college’s honors director should be able to tell you their TAP acceptance rate (though he or she may choose not to).

Of course, most students who have completed 15 or more honors units will have high GPAs, so some question how much the program really helps. A 4.0 student is likely getting in, TAP or not.

For anecdotal evidence… My CCC’s counselor showed me another student’s file (well, she got it out and held it up quickly…didn’t let me examine it, of course). It was a student with a 3.0 GPA and TAP who was accepted to UCLA into a major with an average admitted GPA of 3.4. So it can and does help. Still, its not a guarantee.

I’m applying to UCLA as a history major with a 3.4 TAP. I want to put philosophy as my alternate but i know that my GPA is a little low for history. So i was wondering if i should apply flat out as philosophy and therefore my essay will be focused on that, or leave it as my alternate. I’m trying to determine which scenario would help my chances the most? I will have the pre reqs done for both majors by the end of this fall.

TAP is not a sure thing, but it does increase your chances considerably and admissions will consider a second choice major. I had a really low GPA, but I managed to get into my second major because of TAP.

@la4ever09 - Are you worried that by putting the alternate major, they would accept you into that major, but if you left it off they would put you into your first choice major?

I applied, was accepted to, and graduated from UCLA. I was TAP certified and my GPA was 3.46. My major was Economics. I have a lot of faith in TAP, even for people with lower GPAs. My alternate major was poli-sci.

Priority, not guarantee. It’s a nice thing to have a little peace of mind but I wouldn’t count on it that much. Complete prereqs, IGETC and the highest GPA you can get (3.5 and above sounds safe) with TAP would be good.

The nice thing about it is it lets you pick an alternate major.

Finish all of your prereqs and keep a relatively high gpa and you will get in with TAP. At my old community college (Santa Monica College) the scholars counselor said that from there, 90% of TAP certified students were accepted to UCLA. With that being said, they all had decent gpas and prereqs done

@nick_scheu - You went to a non UC, non CCC for a while? I think that might hurt a little bit. My CCC counselor told me about a girl who briefly went to SFSU before CCC and even though her total GPA was nice, it hurt her chances at the top UCs. I don’t know if this story is true or why its true.

Other than that, 3.3 with all pre-reqs, IGETC and TAP sounds like a sure thing to me. Thats my take on it.

When you apply in November 2010 you write down on the application what classes you plan to take in Spring 2011.

I’m sure it looks better to have them already done with good grades in them, but I think all the UCs accept them finished by the Spring. I think some UCs even let you finish some pre-reqs in the summer.

I hope you’re wrong, haha. I haven’t heard anything about 4-year units automatically making a student less likely to be admitted, unless there is an additional complication (e.g., fewer than 30 CCC units). Well, we’ll see in eight months.

TAP will have a HUGE impact on whether or not you’ll be admitted or not, IF you have a borderline GPA and your major is in the College of Letters and Science. I was admitted to UCLA with a 3.5 as a Political Science major, even though the average admittance for that major was above 3.65+

In regards to finishing prerequisites, it’s ADVISABLE to finish them by the end fall before transferring. Some of the more impacted majors such as biz econ or communications will reject you - even with TAP, if you’re still working on your major prerequisites the spring prior to transfer.

I’m a big proponent of having your major prereqs done by the end of the Fall you apply, especially if you have a mediocre GPA. You need to show them you’re ready for upper division courses, and all A’s goes a long way. One B with the remaining three “planned” for Spring won’t automatically disqualify you, but it would help if they could see your capabilities when making their decision.

Leave Spring for the courses that have little relevance to your major and aren’t your required math or English classes. For liberal arts majors, that means using Spring for your art classes, your science classes, and any electives.

me: 4.0 GPA, TAP certified, several awards and scholarships including 2 gold presidential awards for service learning (in the psychology field, my major) and the coca-cola all state academic team, all requirements…except one which recently changed. They were accepting high school chemistry in lieu of college chemistry and changed it the year I applied. I didn’t get accepted to UCLA

my friend: same major (psychology), 3.6 gpa, TAP certified, no extra curricular…got in.

Yes, I was a little bitter until I found out how AMAZING Berkeley is :)
