How much of a difference will a TAP certification give me in the admissions process?
Major: BizEcon
GPA: 3.9

I heard 90-95% of TAP certified cc students get in to their 1st choice UC so it obviuosly helps a heap.

I hesitate to give you complete assurance, because business econ is incredibly selective and has been known to reject even 4.0 TAP students. However, your GPA is competitive in the major and with TAP, you should be fine. If you have the option to do TAP, definitely do it. It wont hurt and will probably help a whole bunch.

*sidenote- TAP conference on Friday. very exciting stuff.

Allie are you attending the TAP conference? I really want to go but I have a chance to meet with a former ucla rep at Santa Monica College to review my personal statement. Can u let me know how it went and what advice they gave out if you go?

is anyone else going to the conference? do you even think it's worth going to?

Yeah, i am in there. It is SWEET, I got like guaranteed admission ot UCLA. HA 10 out of 11 accepted to ULCA, w00t!

I am going to the TAP conference, I think it'll be good. Does anyone know if UCLA recalculates your GPA you applied with when you turn in your winter grades, I know they do for fall but what about winter?... And I have yet to complete my Stat and section B for English on IGETC... so I am thinking of not even applying this fall since those two classes will not be complete till this winter. The reason is I am applying for a very impacted major (poli sci) and my GPA is not very good (3.7). The only edge I have I think is my essay and the fact that im in TAP... but let me know what you guys think if whether I should apply of not?

Pasadena Boy, I have the same gpa, I'm completing TAP, same major, and I've yet to complete stat. I'm curious to here what others have to say, I have only gotten one response on my thread about my chances at the UCs, CMC, and DC schools (please take a look if any of you have a chance!) :) Good luck!

I will also be going on Friday.

I went to TAP last year as a first year and my friends and I had a really good time. You'd be surprised by how many people show up there and dont even know how many units they need, what classes will transfer, etc. Some of it is redundant and a lot of what they tell you can be found online, but my friends and I are of the mind that being on campus is super motivational and it kinda helps placate us before the big 6 month wait. Also, its a great networking opportunity (last year I had a friend who spoke to the assistant director of admissions as well as the advisor for her major, who each counseled her on her chances. It helps them put a name to a face).

The campus tour is always a good time, too. This year we got several more honors kids to go from out program. Everyone's stoked.

Pasadena_boy- your GPA is actually pretty decent for poli sci, definitely at or above average. As long as you finish the English and Math class before summer, it shouldnt be an issue. TAP will definitely help you. I dont know about grade calculations for the quarter system, but generally whichever semester you send the WIP in for is the last that theyll include into your GPA. My best advice is to find out which quarter they want you to send in your work in progress form for.

ALMOST_THERE, were exactly on the same boat, fortunately I found some answers via the UCLA rep and calling UCLA myself today. Concerning the stat course and other things about TAP... you can e-mail me at jhontesoro@hotmail.com or IM me on aol iijustjonii maybe be can swap info and support. THANKS! and good luck....

I am also going to attend the TAP conference and by the sound of it most of us are already knowledgeable about most or if not all the information that is going to be presented at the conference. I have a 3.78 and am also a poli sci major applying to ucla I dunno about my chances though because I did the cc-csu-cc route by attending one year at csun after trsaferring out of pasadena city college as a lower division transfer and now im at another cc. A ucla rep says Im ok as long as the majority of my courses transferred are from the cc's I attended but I still worry. Anyway yeah the conference is going to be awesome I am attending it not only as a TAP member but as a SITER the program UCLA has which is great for networking as Allie pointed out. Site stands for (Summer Intensive Transfer Experience) it was a week long stay on the campus of UCLA pretty much like a week long conference you actually get to shadow a real ucla student and have all the privileges they have including going to their gym (really good time). Plus they always invite you back when they have a film festival or some other event on campus. Im pretty sure it is going to be hell-a packed this friday cc-students are going to invade westwood. Good Luck to all of you on filling out applications.

Almost_there do you think if we finish the stats course by this semester it won't affect our admission? Also do you know if having your AA degree has any positive weight on your admission?

Technically, you have till the spring semester before the fall you are transfering to finish stat for the major, but I think you will be more competitive if you have finished it earlier than that (shows initiative, capability, etc.) That is just what I'd assume; makes me worry for myself.

Having an AA doesn't affect your competitiveness, from what I've heard.

AA wont be considered at all, but it does help certify that you definitely completed to courses needed. If you've already done all the work, you might as well apply for the AA. An extra degree never hurt anyone.
