So I've applied to the school of theater at UCLA. I've sent in my supplemental information and had my audition/interview. What's next? Does the school of theater send out informal acceptance notifications like school of arts and school of engineering? Or should I wait for admission decisions to be posted? Any information would be gladly appreciated.

My D applied also. Would love to know the same info! Good luck!

I applied last year, you just have to wait for admissions decisions to be posted.

I applied for musical theater, and at the info session before the audition they told us that transfers would hear mid-march, but then the UCLA website says that transfers will not hear decisions until late april. Does anyone know which date is the real one?

I believe transfers would not get a decision til April because that's usually when other transfer decisions are posted.

aw hell. I wish they would let transfers know mid march too, I have to pick housing and turn in down payments for rooms that I might not even be living in. I think I'll call tomorrow to make sure. Thanks!

joshbjones..or others
are you from California? We're from OOS. My D is also waiting to hear from UCLA..and I've been wondering about the reputation of some of the other UC theater departments. She was accepted to UCSD and UCSB. She was also invited to accepted students reception at Tisch (drama)..Do you like UCLA over Tisch? Any insights would be appreciated. Thanks so much...

hey EASTCOASTER...
yes I live in California. UCLA is the only UC I've applied to so I'm not sure about the reputation of other UCs. I though about applying to Tisch but since I live in California, financial aid was a problem. I believe UCLA has a great theater program and its nationally ranked as one of the top theater school. Best of luck to your D.

thanks for your reply, joshbjones..and good luck to you. Will be checking this thread again soon..and hopefully there will be good news for everyone :)

east coaster: Last year I applied to UCLA and UCSD for theater. I wasn't one of the 12 transfers that made the cut at UCLA, but was accepted to UCSD. I went down there for transfer admit day and was absolutely disappointed at the lack of focus on theater at that school for undergrads. I ended up leaving before the day was even over because I had already made up my mind. So I'm going through the admissions process all over again this year!
I don't know much about UCSB.

I think the decision of UCLA vs. Tisch should be what your daughter's focus is. Is she more interested in acting for film/tv or the stage? If it's the former, I'd say UCLA. If the latter, Tisch. Then finances come into play. Even as an OOS UC student, tuition for Tisch is going to be MUCH higher with a remarkably smaller portion of that tuition covered by financial aid. I live in CA, and am still really considering whether or not to turn in my app to Tisch even though I already auditioned (transfer apps aren't due until Apr. 1) because the cost is so high and they don't give enough fin. aid. At UCLA auditions, I met a girl who was trying to transfer to UCLA from Tisch. Everyone in the room instantly asked her why she would consider leaving NYU. She told us it was because after her Sophomore year, she was already $50k in debt. So that's something to think about.

You should really visit both schools and ask questions before making the final decision. Good luck to you and your daughter.

didn't get in. still an amazing program though.

thank you adriennevy,
I hope you hear good news from UCLA..as a transfer sounds like there are so few spaces. My D was accepted (still in shock) so now we have some difficult choices to make. As you wrote..as expensive as UCLA is for an out of stater..close to $44,000..it's still not as crazy as NYU..and I'm sure the cost of living in NYU city will add things up considerably. At this stage in her life she is more interested in film/ television then stage..so your comment about UCLA Vs Tisch on this makes so much sense..especially in regard to internships, connections, etc...I wasn't at the information session for UCLA..and we hope to visit in the next few weeks. Do you know if they ever allow admitted students to visit a class, etc? Also..do you know how many students are in each class? Are the people you know who are already enrolled in the program happy there?? It's such a large university..I'm hoping the actual major is relatively small so that the experience is not too overwhelming..especially for an OOS student...thank you again so much..and all the best of luck to you!

Yes, transferring to UCLA in theater is almost impossible. This year they are letting in "4 or 5 musical theater transfers." It's so disheartening! Congratulations to your D for being accepted (and to multiple amazing schools!) so early in the game. It's great that she's got your support in helping her through all of this, I wish I could say the same about my parents!

Also, don't forget that if your D decides to attend UCLA, she will most likely need a vehicle. Los Angeles County alone contains 88 cities, spanning about 500 square miles. It's possible, but very difficult, to get around without a car with limited public transportation.

I'm not sure about the class sizes, but am almost positive visitors are allowed to visit classes. An admissions counselor could answer that better than I. I have a friend that graduated from the Acing program, got his masters at NYU, and is now performing in productions all over the place. He was very happy with both programs. Bottom line, you get what you put into any program. If your D does all she can to get into productions, projects, etc., the faculty will get to know her and it will open doors.

The one thing about UCLA though that might scare her away is their policy regarding incoming students. They don't really get into performing in large scale productions until their Junior year. Every theater student (screenwriters, puppeteers, directors, actors, costume designers) are put into the same pool, taking the same classes until they can branch off and refine their own craft. This is something they will definitely talk to you about when you visit. At auditions, the gentleman started the info session off with "here are some reasons you should NOT go to UCLA." Basically, they tell you all the things you don't want to hear because they don't want students finding these things out along the line and dropping out.

You shouldn't worry about the university being so large. UCLA School of TFT is much different than the other schools on campus. They keep the same class size through all 4 years. They only let transfers in if freshman or sophomores drop out (unlucky for me) so the class really gets to know eachother, working together for 4 years. In this way, most of the great working connections actually come out of your classmates.

The one thing about NYU that would draw me there, though, is their support of studying abroad. If you pay tuition and rooming fees, tuition abroad doesn't cost any extra. I don't know all that much about it, but it sounds like such a great opportunity and something to definitely look into!

Either way, I'm sure your D will be MORE than happy at whichever school she attends. I'd absolutely love to go to either one.

If you're accepted to UCLA do you have to reapply to the School of Theater? Or do you have to apply specifically to the School of Theater from the beginning? I'm not sure I want to major in theater/drama but definitely want to take courses and probably minor. Can anyone give me any advice on whether I should have applied specifically to the School of Theater within UCLA? I have done extensive theater and I was sent the supplmental request to elaborate on my "unusual talent" that people have been receiving. THANKS.
