UCLA transfer chance

Bio Major
4.0
IGETC complete
Not all prereqs done: Missing both OChem semesters, missing physics series, missing last calculus class(math 32A)
Good volunteer hours
Good personal statement

Biology is an impacted major! I don’t want to hurt you. My major is neuroscience. You must have at least 1 semester of O Chem by spring. Otherwise, your application will not be read even though you have a 4.0 GPA. This was told by two UCLA admission representatives.
Physics series are optional. If you don’t finish physics, you can take it at UCLA once you transfer.

Try to take at least one semester of O Chem by spring. Good luck! :)

Also you need at least one year of calculus (two semesters of calculus)

Would it just be better for me to stay another year and finish OChem, physics, and the last calc? I do have a year of calc in already. oh and would that effect grad school, me staying an extra year(3)?

So you will be finishing calc 1 and calc 2 by spring 2014? If you will finish calc 2 by spring, you meet the minimum requirement for calculus. The calc 3 can be taken at UCLA. You only need 1 semester of O chem.

According to assist.org, “At minimum, you should complete one year of biology with laboratory, one year of general chemistry with laboratory, one year of calculus and one semester of organic chemistry with laboratory. Completion of a second semester of organic chemistry or one year of calculus-based physics is strongly recommended.”

Do you mind telling what community college you are going? I can help you with the prerequisites you need by spring.

Yea I will have calc 1 and 2 done by spring 14. I am going to oxnard college and I am currently taking chem 122 which is a pre req to O Chem, but OChem is a year long course… and I won’t be able to take it by spring 14.

I see what you meant now. You will have BIOL R122, BIOL R120, CHEM R120, CHEM R122, MATH R120, and MATH R121 finished by spring. Since you are taking Chem R 122 in Spring and it is a prereq to O chem, you wont be able to finish O Chem by spring. But, UCLA won’t let you finish O chem in summer.

That can be a problem if you miss 1 semester of O Chem by spring. The two UCLA admission told me they had rejected students for missing 1 semester of O Chem even though they had a 4.0 GPA. However, if you have a strong personal statement, you might still have a chance. Maybe, they will do an exception? Good luck!

If you really want to transfer to UCLA, you can stay one more year to finish O chem and physics.

I think UC Davis will accept you for sure if you have applied there. UCI won’t take students with no O Chem either.

Your perfect GPA gives a shot of admittance, assuming you get in you have 2 choices:

1) stay an extra year at community college and spend 2 years at UCLA

Or

2) transfer in fall 2014 and spend 3 years at UCLA.

If you transfer early you will have the advantage of spending more time @ UCLA and being able to be part of more research opportunities. Which will actually help you in grad school, so any effect on grad school is going to be positive.

The advantage of staying an extra year at Oxnard is that the classes are going to be a lot easier over there and you will probably could maintain your high GPA… Let me tell you that Ochem, physics is much much harder at UCLA and even smart transfer students have trouble adjusting… Plus you will spend less money…

if you get rejected don’t take it personally… The UC’s are starting to crackdown on people that take 3 years at UC after transferring… If you think about it staying a 3rd keeps other transfer students from getting admitted. It is also cheaper for the state of California to only keep you for 2 years at UCLA…

Hello I am a current out of state applicant applying to UCLA UCB UCSD USC . I have a 3.77 hoping to get into the Psychology program. I have completed all the pre-reqs… My major gpa is a 4.0. I will have 61 credits by the end of spring.I work 30 hrs a week along with volunteering at a mental facility. I am also apart of the honors program and Phi Theta Kappa society. What are my chances?

DUDE! You might have a chance although since you are in SO CAL…
I applied as a human bio and society major B.S which has the same pre reqs
UCSD is a better school for bio just saying… Got in but still wanting to know if i could get into LA
Im pretty much in the same boat as you!
3.95 GPA
Finished all of my Calc B in calc 1, A in calc 2& 3(Multivariable and Analytical Geo)
Finishing Chem series So gen chem 2 is being completed as we speak
Finished Statistics for the hell of it
Did one semester of Engineering physics
Finished Gen bio H and taking Genetics.
In Honors program (completed honors program)
Not in PTK :frowning: not gonna pay 90 dollars lol…
I go to MT.SAC so idk man…
