I’m hoping if I’m accepted to UCLA I’ll get a generous amount in grants. UCSD has me as Blue & Gold eligible in their financial aid estimate so that’s a good sign. :)

@ zomgrad

I hear you! I’ve got full rides at both UCI and UCSD, and if I were to be accepted to UCLA, I don’t think I will get any money.

i’m not counting on grants from UCLA. They hardly give out money and I’m not necessarily “financially” crippled according to FAFSA (but I beg to differ!). I still don’t know why Irvine gave me money, but I’m not complaining. I wonder when UCLA will come out with their financial aid packets. Money is honestly the driving force as to where I’m going next year…although I’m ridiculously annoyed that I didn’t receive any invites to the Regents…I mean come on. My GPA!

@Zomgrad I’m also B&G eligible:)
@UCdrone I completely agree with what you’ve been saying

Anyway, do you guys think UCSB and UCD are the same ranking? Or is one higher than the other?

@UCdrone @xMathx Ah that’s sad to hear about UCLA. I had no idea…

I also didn’t get invited to apply for Regents even though I think some people with GPAs lower than mine were invited.

@ xMathx

I’m surprised about the Regent’s awards as well. I thought everyone who qualified got in, but I guess not. I didn’t know that UCLA hardly gave out any grants, that explains why my brother had to take out loans for undergrad and law school–and he graduated magna cum laude!

Random question, but how would you compare UCLA’s workload to other schools like CC’s or low tier UCs (UCM, UCR, UCSC)?
I really wanna get in and attend UCLA but then im also scared my gpa is about to drop like a falling anvil.

@ jrlovesseattle

UCD ties with UCSD, with UCSB and UCI next in line. Rankings really don’t matter, as they only apply to the strength of certain programs, and I believe that its the graduate programs that are ranked.

Thanks for the compliment, now you’ve made my day! :)

@ Thugfish

My brother went to UCLA for undergrad and law school as a single father. He told me it was just like community college, but he studied at the library until it closed at CCC. He once told me that his professor said it this way: All UCs are little meat factories, they all make the same sized meatballs.

@UCdrone, np and thanks for the info:) as a poli sci (prelaw) major I feel like Davis has a better ranking but guess that’s all in my head!

@thugfish 1) awesome username
2) I also worry about this

Transfer students generally do better than those who already attend, so I wouldn’t worry about it…on the other hand, if you’re a pre-med that’s a different story.

^care to elaborate about the pre-med part?

@jrlovesseattle

No such thing as prelaw! Nothing really prepares you for law school, I’m a paralegal and I know exactly what a lawyer has to do. That is not to say that I haven’t met EXCELLENT lawyers who majored in Political Science. Political Science is a great major, but it won’t help make law school any easier.

@biotoucla

I think he is just alluding to the fact that the classes required for premed are much more difficult than what is required for many other college paths.

@UCdrone, for sure! I just meant I’m majoring in poli sci and hope to go to law school afterwards. But yeah that’s what I hear lol

Pre-meds should generally go wherever they can get the better GPA.

@jrlove haha thanks

@UCdrone thats impressive, im expecting my grades to take a hard hit for sure but im hoping to be able to keep above a 3.5 every quarter at a high tier UC.

Im just kinda scared that i start out terrible and then it starts snowballing. The only good thing is my uc gpa transfers over so i have something to take the hit for me if i end up getting raped in my classes.

@ jrlovesseattle

It’s all a game, and the law school you attend DOES matter. Go to the best school you can for undergrad, and by that I mean one with a good program where you will thrive as a student. Your survival will depend on going to a Tier 1 law school, you can go Tier 2 and be okay–some even become legal rock stars. Your best bet, is go Tier 1 and that means a high as $#^@ GPA, and a super high LSAT score. The legal field is dying, and everything is changing. Paralegal jobs are drying up and going to India (and I mean Indian Lawyers!). I remember looking for paralegal work and seeing ads that specifically asked lawyers to refrain from applying. I can go on, but I don’t want to bore you.

Does anyone know the conditions of admission for last years batch?

Was it 2.0, 3.0, or did it have specifics?

@UCdrone thank you for that valuable information!! You have a brother that went to law school so I am sure you have a lot of insight in these matters.
