I haven't had much luck finding the answer to this question, either on CC or on the UCLA website.

If you are an incoming freshman, what are your chances of getting a double rather than a triple room in the residence halls, plazas, or suites? If you are a sophomore, what are your chances? Do any sophomores have singles, or do the singles go to juniors and seniors?

My son is a junior. From what I understand the majority of freshmen are put in triples either in a hall or plaza. I think as sophomores there is an increased chance of being able to get a double. My son was in a triple freshman year and chose to be in a triple sophomore year because it is cheaper. Singles are very expensive, so not an option for us, and I have no idea how hard they are to get. Here is a link to this years prices: [2012-2013 Contract Housing Rates and Payment Plans (1005183)](http://map.ais.ucla.edu/go/1005183) And for other questions you might try the ASK Housing function: [Find Answers](http://ask.housing.ucla.edu/) In general it is suggested for freshmen to be in a triple on a Hall (bathroom down the hall), because they are the most social. My son ended up in a Plaza (bathroom in the room), which ended up being social enough.

If you are an incoming freshman, what are your chances of getting a double rather than a triple room in the residence halls, plazas, or suites?
Not likely, but possible.

If you are a sophomore, what are your chances?
Much higher because you sign up for the room you want. If you get an early sign up time, more double room will be available to choose from.

Do any sophomores have singles, or do the singles go to juniors and seniors?
Depends on how many are left to pick from when your sign up time comes.

For freshmen, the odds are probably under 10%. For sophomores it is really dependent on the specific building you want and the sign-up time that you are assigned. Juniors and seniors typically do not have a problem finding doubles.

Seniors would also have trouble because the three-year (freshman admit) or one-year (transfer admit) housing guarantee puts them in a lottery for university housing.
