Easy to get a double room as a sophomore?

My daughter is currently a freshman living in a plaza triple with a shared bath. Next year she and one room mate would like a double in a plaza with a private bath. What are their chances? I know they have priority numbers and housing sign ups start on March 3rd. Can anyone who has been through this process as a sophomore shed some light here? They are really interested in an off campus apt. but those are hard to come by. Thanks!

It depends when her housing sign-up time is. What time you get seems only loosely based on seniority since I got the second day as a freshman. I think there were a fair amount of plaza doubles around the middle of the second day.

off-campus apts are not hard to come by. i live in midvale plaza and they are pre-leasing right now. as a matter of fact, a lot of big apt. complexes are pre-leasing. i don’t know about others but Jefferson Court and Midvale Plaza are pretty nice places. rent is 1950 per month for one bedroom. 2800-2950 for 2 bedroom.

so it doesnt really matter what type of room we chose on the app? we just pick whatever’s availible?

I’d think that filling out the application lets UCLA plan in advance how many doubles/triples to set aside but yes unless you are in incoming freshman you are able to pick exactly which building/floor/room you want assuming someone else hasn’t taken it.

About that, so if we wrote down we wanted a triple plaza, we could actually pick a hall double? I don’t plan on doing this, but I’ve heard a few people ask in the past few days, and I’ve gotten curious  And this would be for returning students…

returning students can pick whatever room is open in any building, regardless of type they chose on the app.

So just to be sure I get this, they could be sure of getting a double with a private bath in a plaza if that were open, right? If they picked a floor that only had a few rooms available then they wouldn’t be with a ton of freshman students?

It’s very random. It’s all dependent on sign-up time, and whoever has the earlier one is responsible for signing up the other, too. My roommate and I both had bad sign-up times, and our choices by the third day’s late afternoon were Hedrick doubles or E/F triples.

i want an off campus apt… and have the second day of sign ups… if i just want 2 bd/2 bathrooms… @ glenrock, will those be filled?

If your time is on late second day or later, then doubles in the popular areas of De Neve (ABCD) will likely be gone. You will have a chance for E and F. There will be plenty of doubles in Courtside remaining, well until the 3rd and 4th day.

Doubles in Rieber Terrace should be gone by early second day or earlier. Similar story for Rieber Vista. There might be a few in Hedrick Summit too.

The number of unallocated rooms will be predetermined, and most likely balanced in a plaza from floor to floor. There is usually a reasonable amount of doubles on each floor … (except at Rieber Terrace) … so any way, there will be freshmen.

Do I have a good chance of getting a double in Dykstra with a 1:30 sign-up time on day 3?

Also, Sproul triple vs. Dykstra double? Which would you choose? This is from someone coming from a Sunset triple who isn’t in love with the private bath and would like a more social community.

Double >>> Triple

double > triple
but
sproul > any other hal

DEFINITELY a double in dykstra > triple in sproul

you will never again go back to a triple once you’ve been in a double

also on a sidenote, how many juniors do you think will be in sproul next year? I’m going to be a third year and since I don’t really care about my room and want to save some money I’m going to be in a double in sproul

^ I think a fair few… I’m gonna be a junior too and if I don’t get a UA I’m gonna sign up for Sproul again (I’m in Sproul this year and I know of four juniors on my floor… which I think is actually a pretty good percentage considering that I’m not very connected with my floor, haha). We’ll definitely be waaay outnumbered by the first and second years, but like you kinda said, I think most juniors who want/need to stay on campus but also want to save money will be in Sproul since it’s obviously the nicest res hall

Triple in Sproul > Double in Dykstra > Double in Hedrick

:-/

do you guys think 3:30 pm on the first day is early enough to get a guys double in rieber terrace?

Be happy. You’re on the first day. :'(

how fast do the university apts typically go? does anyone know?
