UCLA,UCSD,UCD?

Stay local for UCLA or leave? 3 years community college close to home (San Fernando)

UCLA Biopsy
UCSD Neuro and Physio
UCD Neuro Physio Bio
Not sure what I want to do, thinking clinical research
The dilemma: BADLY want to leave home and have college experience and finally have space and independence. But I live 30 mins from UCLA, and I want the name power, etc. Parents would allow me to move to Westwood but I feel it wouldn’t be the same as being away.
What would you do, why? What’s worth it?

We live about an hour from UCLA and my transfer D dormed. Even at 30 min she would have dormed too, just to avoid parking hassles.

Why don’t you ask here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/1903626-fall-2017-ucla-official-transfer-thread-p1.html

Is it about the campus or about the surrounding community? If you want to go explore another community or part of the state, go to San Diego or Davis. If it is the campus, once you move in you will feel like you are away and getting the college experience. You would just need to be a little more self disciplined and not go home on weekends.

My daughter loved Davis and also did the NPB program! We’re from SD. I would recommend UCD over SD. She graduated last June and got into UCSF for grad.

If you want to get away from home, Davis would be it. She traveled a lot to Bay area and Northern Cal events: Tahoe, Napa, SF, Yosemite, Sequoia.

Here’s my two cents: You can’t beat UCLA. It’s phenomenal and being “on-campus” is really different than being at home. It is a city within the city. The prestige will benefit you.

As @“aunt bea” has said, if you really want the college experience, I would go to UCD. No transportation should be available besides the Greyhound (as well as other buses) and plane. You’ll have to settle in and start being independent (of which I highly recommend). It’s a very fun school too.

As you see in my profile picture, the vast majority of students who are from the SF Bay area leave home during the weekends, some even traveling back during the day.

I think UCSD will depend on your motivation. I have a couple of friends who go there and some left while others have not gone home yet (freshman). It’s not the best place for the “college experience” either; people there by and large only care about the beach, metropolis of SD, and academics.

Even though UCLA is very prestigious, it will still be there. In other words, you can go there for graduate, professional, or even work there. If you turn down UCLA, you definitely won’t be the only one. Good luck!

EDIT: UCSD is better than UCD in neuro, but UCD is still phenomenal.
