Hi,

A few of my grades recently changed last week and I e-mailled UCLA to ask how to report them. Instead, the next day I learned that I had been rejected.

I am a straight A student, but received 2 C's last year (1st and 2nd semester of math). My grades recently changed to B's, so my unweighted GPA for 10th and 11th went from 3.83 to 3.92 and my weighted GPA went from 4.17 to 4.27. This grade change was done so late in the year because my math teacher left our school due to serious health issues. Therefore, it took a while to figure out how to get my grades changed.

Other than that, I was junior class president and am senior class president. I've been part of 3 varsity sports, and have played these three sports all 4 years.

What are my chances for getting into UCLA? Do I have to go through the appeal process or can I explain the situation and somehow be reconsidered without waiting for appeals?

Hey there,

Definitely call the admission and ask. They are open 1-4 PM Pacific Time. Don’t believe anyone else, lol.

I personally don’t think you need appeals, because what they are evaluating is the transcript with the 2 C’s. So, call and ask how you can change your grade. If they tell you to do appeal, then get started! This process is very annoying, so if you have anything else new and compelling, do throw it in there, ok? Good luck!

Thanks for your reply! If I send it the materials for an appeal early (by this Friday perhaps) will I find out early too? Or will I find out in May?

Did they say you need an appeal? I mean, if you don’t have to, why not just ask them for some other way? You might get an answer earlier than May if you don’t do an appeal. I wish I can tell you but I really am not sure.

Also, avoid appeals if you can. From my knowledge, 100 appeals have about 1 successful one, so don’t get yourself stuck in that case. Admissions are VERY bitter about appeals lol. Hope you succeed!

At this point, an explanation and appeal are one and the same. But the good news is that your appeal has a factual basis, and you can present new information. An appeal also allows you to add a rec and senior grades – I hope they are excellent. However, I’m not sure how much two grades really matter in the grand scheme of admissions. Thus, the result might not be any different.

Good luck.
