UCLA vs. NYU

I'm deciding between UCLA and NYU. I want go into astronomy or physics, as of now. UCLA has an astrophysics major, which I like. Both have physics majors. Also, I could minor in German at both and study abroad in a German-speaking country.

I'm from NJ, an hour out of Manhattan by train. I'm very comfortable with the area around NYU and love it. I would know people around there and be able to see my family. I loved UCLA when I visited it, but it is a six hour flight and I don't know the rest of LA very well.

Neither are offering me financial aid. UCLA is $56000 and NYU is $61000, though this would come close to evening out with the transportation costs for UCLA. I am somewhat scared to go so far from home.

I've been struggling a bit in my AP Physics class this year, though I really enjoy my BC Calculus class. The ability to have good teachers and good academic support is important to me, though I realize these are both huge schools. I get the impression that UCLA has stronger sciences in general.

I'd much prefer the weather in LA, but I am used to the weather around NYU.

Most of all, I just want somewhere I'd be happy. People seemed friendlier at UCLA, but again, I'm used to New Yorkers.

Please give advice!

I know it’s hard to say right now because you haven’t lived in LA, but I recommend attending school where you intend to live long-term. As things are in this world, employers are more familiar with their hometown institutions, and typically hold them in higher regard. As a result, connections and recommendations are more meaningful if they come from an institution nearby. If you plan to attend graduate school, then where you attend undergrad is less important in this regard because you’ll possibly be relocating again when you get admitted. If you love both schools, then it’s a tough draw, but one made up of good options.

I agree, go to school where you would like to work and live post college. UCLA and LA in general have a lot of east coasters, it’s a big mix of people.

UCLA has an astrophysics major (which you want), UCLA is cheaper in cost (even though you have to travel, those only happen once to get there), UCLA has a stronger sciences department (trust me, the right professors can make all the difference), and UCLA will require greater commitment being away from home (this will allow you greater commitment to your studies and more focus in school).

UCLA seems like the choice! Plus, So. Cal. weather is amazing!

However, I’d recommend you consult your GUT! I know it sounds funny, but what is your gut feeling about the two schools? If your gut is giving you a better feeling about one school over the other (especially since they are both about equal in your mind), then go with your gut feeling!

I got into Stanford so I’m actually going there! I had given up hope. But thanks everyone!
