So I'm sort of in a weird position right now.

I just got accepted to University of California, Los Angeles and here are the pros of going:

only $6,000 on student loans (everything else is free)

ten minutes from home (which is not a very good thing or bad)

great school

BUT before i was accepted, I would never had considered another school over NYU. I've always dreamed of living in New York City, I attended a summer program at Columbia (loved the city), and my dream school was Columbia (but i got rejected ED), and found NYU to be a much better fit for me.

For NYU I applied to Steinhardt as a communications major.

these are the cons of attending NYU over UCLA:

+probably a lot more expensive (since NYU is notorious for being stingy)
+ steinhardt is pretty unselective compared to UCLA

But the biggest pro for NYU is that I would be living my dream, i would be happy, i think...

What are some advice? Is it easier to get into a grad school from Steinhardt at NYU or UCLA....Whats better?

id say dont make your decision based on financial aid.

what kind of career do you envision yourself in? that may help determine your decision. also, if you are set on going to grad school at nyu, do you think youd rather try two different schools or stay at the same one undergrad to grad? would you prefer city or campus? and think a bit more on whether you would like to stay close to home or explore new areas.

but either way, congrats on getting into ucla dude. personally i think the campus is absolutely beautiful, and i probably would have chosen going there instead of nyu except that you have to wait two years to apply to their film program (and thus, i did not even apply for undergrad at all there).

but yeah, definitely wait for nyu's decision and weigh out/think through alllll the pros and cons of both, and ultimately, follow where you think you will be happiest. if you dont have to, you shouldnt make your decision based just on financial aid or just on the quality of the program. both are very important, but there are always more factors to take into consideration.

I started thinking baout NYU in 7th grade, and like you, dreaming of my future life in NYC. But by the time Senior year had come along, I had convinced myself that I no longer wanted it. I kept talking about other schools and whenever someone asked me where I'd applied to, I always mentioned NYU last. But when I got my GSP letter.....I was.....so happy. I mean....you're talking head-over-heels ECSTATIC. I'll be going into severe debt, but ANYthing that can make me feel the way it does is bound to be good for me.

All though I don't believe in any specific god--christian or whatever--I've learned to trust fate; fate always seems to lead me in the right direction....so I suggest that you go with your gut.

Don't go into debt for the sake of attending college in a particular city.

College is 4 years of your life. After that comes the rest of your life, and you will have the opportunity to relocate wherever you want. So you could go broke for the sake of living in NY, emerge with tons of debt and be stuck living at home with your parents and working some job you aren't excited about because you owe all that money..... or you could go to UCLA and defer the dreams of living in NY, but graduate and be able to seriously consider accepting exciting internship or job opportunities in NYC without regard to the salary level.

So wait to see whether NYU offers an acceptable level of financial aid - and if not, don't be foolish.
