UCLA vs. UC-Berkeley

ok..a little bit back to normal haha..

like UCLAri said, financial aid tends to tip the scale for most ppl deciding between UCLA and USC...especially for OOS kids who have to pay roughly the same for both schools...USC typically offers the better finaid package for OOS since...well, they have more money...but for in-state students, UCLA provides the same quality, if not better, education/student life than USC with only half the cost

I took a trip down south to UCLA to visit some of my Bruin transfer buddies...I really enjoyed UCLA's campus (I hate Los Angeles as a city, but UCLA has a beautiful campus and Westwood's fun to hang out at).

When I asked my friends which school they think I would "fit in" more, they all said Berkeley. By no means did they mean that as an insult...they tell me my personality and interests (hiking, outdoors) is very Berkeley. (I haven't been to Cal yet, btw, so I can't really agree or disagree).

The thing is, I'm majoring in communications. I hear UCLA has a "NOTORIOUS" communications program. I haven't heard much about Cal's mass comm. program. Does anyone know how their communication programs compare?

about financial aide, my case is different cause my stats weren't good enough (gpa <3.5) for most merit scholarships and my parents make barely enough money for me to get no fin aide. If you can get aide then the schools do become comparable.

UCLA

Don't ask me why.

when do UCLA/berkeley decisions come out?

UCLA decisions come out April 1st. I don't know about Berkeley, but last year they came out March 31st.

April 1st, a few weeks earlier if you apply for the HSSEAS of UCLA.

was it 31st? i thought i got both ucla/ucb at the same time...shrugs

Hey, check out awards/honors for faculty at UCLA and UC Berkeley

http://www.ucla.edu/about/faculty/honors.html
http://www.berkeley.edu/about/honors/

UCLA:
Engineers get it around March 1st, within that week. Non-engineers are admitted starting on the 12th, though they said it was the 15th. Admissions are given out until the 31st.

Berkeley:
They started releasing admission status on the 31st, sometime at the night. They are prompt, never early.

In 2006, UCLA posted their decisions on the afternoon of Friday March 10. Cal posted at 4PM on March 30th. Cal's website says they will have admission decisions available on Mar 29, 2007.

oh right...my memory fails me. again.

yup, March 10th was a great day.

It doesn't make a difference if you go to UCLA or Cal in terms of academics. Choose the school that you would feel most comfortable living in for 4 years.

sorry to seemingly hijack the thread for a moment, but I have a quick question. Doesn't it seem like UCLA is becoming more competitive for OOS than UCB? I've been noticing that the numbers to get into UCLA from OOS seems a lot harder than UCB. Don't ask me where I saw it, just a feeling.

But here are my thoughts about UCB vs UCLA

For UCLA:
-Amazing athletics (number 1 in NCAA history)
-LA (nuff said)
-Amazing Academics that = Berkeley in my mind

Cons:
Same as UCB

For UCB:
-Amazing, if not slightly overrated for undergrad, academics
-Amazing, if not slightly overrated for undergrad, reputation WORLDWIDE

Cons:
Same as UCLA

In short, these two schools are so similar, that I admire anyone who chooses to go to either school. I personally perfer UCLA because of its sports teams (I really like NCAA sports :D), but seriously, it all depends on you. Visit and decide for yourself

now, can anyone answer my question lol?

i thought a good amount of OOS/international students were accepted this year...wasn't it around 20 something percent?

Yeah, I was wondering what the stats were.
