UCLA vs UCSB

i was talking to a PhD grad from UCLA's graduate school of education who now works in the los angeles county department of education the other day, and he said that maybe in 5-10 years, UCSB may catch up or at least be right behind UCLA for undergrad education. his reasoning was that the new chancellor at UCSB has been trying to clean up its partying image and promote its hidden academic quality (as well as using typical marketing tactics like the # of nobel prize winners to attract attention).

i personally think while UCSB may be improving, it still has to catch up to UCSD and students will still want to matriculate at UCSD rather than UCSB (assuming they were rejected by UCB and UCLA). also, UCSB doesnt have the data to rapidly rise in the USNWR, a source that many kids use to determine "prestige." however, a school that can boast strong academics in an excellent location will surely attract more top students.

what do you guys think?

I tend to agree with you that it will take a bit to overtake UCSD but I think it's possible over some span of time.

The whole USNWR thing is an abomination and the bottom line is that many students use them as a crutch to keep from doing research or thinking for themselves.
