Which applied science path are you taking????????

I am saving 131A until the last quarter and i asked the math advisor and she said that it is what most students choose to do as it is one of the hardest classes.

I planning to follow the math/management patern but i found out that I have to take 2 graduate courses in management that also require 2 other graduate courses as prereg. I'm kind of not so clear on what courses are really needed and how to arrange the classes in a efficient way. You got any tips since you see the advisor already?

Ok well i worked out my 2 year plan all on my own and had the advisor approve it and correct a few things.... for example some courses i had listed are no longer offered so she suggested other courses.

I suggest you come to oreination with a 2 year plan laid out and a list of questions you have for your advisor so that you dont waste time.

Additionally sinceyour going to orienation Late i suggest you make a plan of atleast 2 /maybe 3 alternate fall schedules.

this is what i did: listed all the clases i needed to take and their prequisites.

Then made sure i had 60 upper division courses and atleast 180 total units including the ones i had from CC.

Then i organized them into a neat 2 year plan .

i brought that to orination and she advisor looked it over and made changes. this is my two year plan":

Kevin you need to take management 402, 407 and 140 before you can take the two graduate courses 212A and 212B... also you should note that the graduate courses are only offered once per year so you will be at UCLA for a while

also 402 and 407 are graduate courses.

By the way, you should know, that your program is the closest related program to a business degree at UCLA, not biz econ like most people think.

The math-managment program has the MOST managment courses... its basiclly 50 from the school of management and 50 % math

Well I read my DPR and it said:
UD Requirements for Mathematics
Math 110A
Math 110B
Math 115A
Math 120A
Math 131A
Math 131B
Math 132
5 elects Math 106-199; Stats M100A-120B
Units Needed: 48.0

Im not sure if this is what I need to follow or is there more that they will tell me at orientation?

yes that is what you should follow but keep in mind you need 60 uppper divison units to graduate and you only have 48 so you will need to take another 12 units.

Kevin this should help you... i did this b/c i am thinking of changing to the math/management one, i didnt know that you were able to take 7+ managment coures, if you add the accounting minor to that it is one awsome degree..... its actually about 10 managment courses plus with the accounting minor its about 4 more managment coures......... that is basiclly a degree from the anderson shcool.

anyways, these are the required classes and the classes b4 them are the prequisites for that course... if it says optional in parenthesis that is just what i chose b/c its what i found intresting.

Lower Division ( you may have these done alreayd)
Math 33A
Math 33B
Math 61
Pic 10A
Man 100

Upper Division major courses (Preq/Course)
Math 33a/ 115A. Linear Algebra. (4)
Math 33b /131A. Analysis. (4)
Math 115a/ 164. Optimization. (4)
math 33b/ 170A. Probability Theory. (4)
Math 170a /170B. Probability Theory. (4)
Math 170a /172A-Actuarial Math
Math 172 A /172B. Actuarial Mathematics. (4-4)
(2 additional from 106-199---I chose Math 172 A/B)

Man 100 / Management 120A Intermediate Financial Acctng I
Man 120a/ Management 120B Intermediate Financial Acctng II
Man 100/Stats /Management 122 Cost Accounting
Stats 11/ Management 140 Elem of Prod& Oper Res *
407/402/Man 140/ Management 212A Decision Sciences Models I *
407/402 /Management 212B Decision Sciences Models II *
Man 130A /Man 133 (One additional form 108-132)

Please note if it says (/stats) that means that just any stats class is reuqired and that 170A or B will satisfy the stat requirment for that course.

Hope that Helps.

Is that for math/management? What can you do with that degree?

well if you take the actuary courses you can be an actuary. you can work as an accountant or even in ibanking...... you can do a ton of things.

that is the closest thing to a business degree in UCLA. It requires 10 managment courses ....... 4 of which are at the graduate level.

i was thinking of doing that with a minor in accoutning from the anderson shcool but that would be about 15 courses and it says the max that undergraduate can take is 11, i wonder if that can somehow be petitioned.

I was doing Math/ECON and maybe a minor in accounting if i got into the minor but now i really want this Math/managment with a minor in accounting.......... hmm i dont know what i should do.

I was thinking of doing math/econ but im not sure if I can really get into that.

what math are you doing? just plain math?

see for me just math would be wayyyyy to much math.

i need math/other

and econ seemed good but i just didnt realize they had managment as an option.

i really like the managment courses more than the narrow scope of econ courses. All the econ courses i have to take are like Financial Mathematics and Mathematics of FInance and econometrics.... bascilly its all math based econ courses and i would like something more social science like to kind of create a well balanced degree.

Applied math is the path I think im going to take. I was thinking pure math but I heard the type of jobs that come along with that arent too good. I want to add something to mine also, some minor but im still really not sure what to do.

what do u want to do?

what exaclty are you going to do with an applied math degree? actuary?

sorry i know actuary is like my answer to everything math related, but seriously what else is there that is well paid?

Oh... thank you very much for the information!

Darn, I thought I could graduate within two years but it seems like it is close to impossible.

One funny thing was like my intended major was applied math so I took physics plus other requirement but then I signed up for math/applied science but it turns out that i need NO science for math/management. How stupid!

overachiever? yea right....you guys should look at the unit requirement for EE majors...if I were to take three classes a quarter, which I gladly would, I would stay in UCLA for the next 4 years....

How much do actuaries pay malishka? Im not sure what im going to do with that degree.

Here: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos041.htm

Applied math seems like something I would be more interested in. Actuaries do pay a lot of money though im not sure how much I can get paid with an applied math degree. Thanks for the link sparkle:)

What are you giong to do with the math/managment/accounting degree?

I want to maybe switch to that but i cant decide if Math/Econ with accounting minor would be a better choice.

I mean i know there is a high chance i will not get into the accounting minor due to its selectivity.
