I am a Massachusetts resident and recently was accepted to UCLA. So far, I have been accepted by UCLA, UCSD, UMass Amherst, UMinnesota, and University of Illinois Urbana Champaign. I have narrowed my choices down to University of Illinois Urbana Champaign Engineering and UCLA Economics + Math Joint Major.

UCLA will cost me 55 k/yr as an OOS student and my EFC is 24k/yr. The rest will have to be taken out as a loan. UCLA has a wonderful math department and i think math+econ is good for jobs.

However, that being said, I know engineering is the most stable major and i will almost definitely find a well paying job. UIUC costs 48k / yr for me too, but they give me subsidized loans and stuff.

I am indifferent between the two majors, but i think engineering will make it easier to pay off loans.

Which university should I choose?
and

Is UCLA OOS tuition worth it?

It’s tough to say, but here are some things to also take into consideration.

You will most likely graduate from ucla with math/econ major in 4 years, however it may take you 4.5 years to graduate with an engineering major at UIUC. There is usually quite a significant difference in work load.

Do you care where you work after you graduate? It is infinitely easier to find jobs in california if you graduated from UCLA. If you want to work in the east coast, or do finance/banking in ny, I don’t think either will make a difference.

I’m not sure what kind of engineering major you applied as, but the difference may be:

60-80k starting job as an engineer (potentially up to 100k if CS at top company)
40-60k starting job as math/econ

UIUC is a terrific school for engineering. I live in Silicon Valley and can tell you that I personally know a number of hi tech companies (including mine) who recruit directly from UIUC & so I do not agree with vesper39 that it would be easier to find jobs in CA if you go to UCLA.

Also, my D graduated from UIUC and (her friends and she) did not have any problems graduating in 4 years

Math+econ is also a great option- I have some personal knowledge of the econ depts in the 2 schools & I would say that UCLA is probably more reputed. However, they are widely different programs - go with whatever you are more interested in. Both of them should offer you plenty of job options

Definitely go UIUC. They’re one of the top schools in the nation for engineering, and if they’re cheaper, they’re worth it. I know a LOTof people who went there and have never heard of anyone (like, anyone) not graduating on time (in comparison to that of UCLA, which is talked about quite frequently).
