I have a few questions with my main goal being- please just tell me everything I need to know in preparation for this upcoming fall quarter. (Please don’t kill me. Could you please just tell me as much as know? I know NOTHING about all of this.)

-Do I have to SIR in order to register for Bruin Day and orientation?
-Scholarships: do more opportunities present themselves as the quarter starts? So far I only qualify and am applying to the Alumni Scholarship and the TAP Scholarship. Are there any others I am not aware of? Do you recommend instead that I visit the scholarship office/when should I do that if I do?
-What are the 2 courses needed to place into psych? Since at the moment I am still pre-psych
-How do I make sure I get the classes I need for the psych major as well as pre-med courses? You mentioned a glitch last year. And is the site that I use for that called Class Planner? What is the link on myucla for it?
-Your thoughts on the Honors Program?
-Housing: I have really bad allergies- who do I consult to request a single? Do I file anything with student disabilities or just give them a note from my doctor? How does housing work in terms of priority and finding out if you got it? Does the offer come out in waves or do you just apply and pray to the Housing Gods?
-What is the likelihood of being able to switch into Psychobio? I know that on every site I have come across that since it’s impacted so psychobio is a “no no”, but I have also asked some current Bruins and they said that as long as you have a decent GPA that they will consider you? I’m only asking because I will be completing all the pre-med classes that happen to overlap with the psychobio degree and I was opposed to taking pre-med classes at smc
-Would it be possible to meet up and you can show me around campus and just teach me what you’ve learned as a fellow psych major? I can spot you on some coffee and btw I’m a girl (just in case I’ve been sounding like a creep thus far)
-Also, regarding the “Expected Cumulative Progress”, I found that form a bit confusing. But I’m wondering, what is the minimal unit requirement for transfers to be enrolled in per quarter? I’m trying to space out my quarters and want to stay at UCLA for 3 years, not 2 because of pre-med classes
-Computers: I need to invest in a good computer. Do you happen to know whether you recommend a macbook or a macbook pro or air? I have had windows computers my whole life but my dad lost his job so I’m paying for a computer by myself and want to make sure that I will have enough memory on it for all of the science lectures I will be studying, etc.

Here is what I just sent to you.

-Do I have to SIR in order to register for Bruin Day and orientation?
No, you do not have to SIR to attend/register for Bruin Day. You do have to SIR before you register for orientation. Sign ups for orientation occur after the SIR deadline.

-Scholarships: do more opportunities present themselves as the quarter starts? So far I only qualify and am applying to the Alumni Scholarship and the TAP Scholarship. Are there any others I am not aware of? Do you recommend instead that I visit the scholarship office/when should I do that if I do?
I’d visit the FA office when you get a chance. I have no clue about more scholarship opportunities, sorry!

-What are the 2 courses needed to place into psych? Since at the moment I am still pre-psych
100A and 100B need to be taken before you can declare as a psych major. 100A is Psychological Statistics, and 100B is research methods. They have to be taken consecutively, not concurrently. This means you can’t take both in the same quarter. Some classes will be closed to you until you complete these two courses and declare. I took both over the summer, but I do not recommend you do that. Maybe just take 100A over the summer to get it out of the way.

-How do I make sure I get the classes I need for the psych major as well as pre-med courses? You mentioned a glitch last year. And is the site that I use for that called Class Planner? What is the link on myucla for it?
The way you register for classes at orientation is different from the way you normally register for classes. At orientation, you will be limited to 2 major classes and one non major class. So, you could sign up for 100(A or B), another psych elective, and 1 premed class. My general feeling about getting classes is that I can always get something that will satisfy a requirement, but it might not always be my first choice. I’m not pre-med, so I’m not too sure about the sciences, but I know they fill up quickly because a lot of freshman take those classes. The glitch last year was that some classes were not open, but they should fix that for this year.
Class planner is on MyUCLA under the “classes tab”

-Your thoughts on the Honors Program?
Not in it, so I have no clue

-Housing: I have really bad allergies- who do I consult to request a single? Do I file anything with student disabilities or just give them a note from my doctor? How does housing work in terms of priority and finding out if you got it? Does the offer come out in waves or do you just apply and pray to the Housing Gods?
Re: getting a single, I have no idea. My guess is you should contact the Office for Students with Disabilities (https://www.osd.ucla.edu/). For first-year transfers, housing is released all at the same time. As a returning student, it will come out in waves

No clue, I never tried to switch. Probably close to 0% chance, but you can always ask the psych department.

-Would it be possible to meet up and you can show me around campus and just teach me what you’ve learned as a fellow psych major? I can spot you on some coffee and btw I’m a girl (just in case I’ve been sounding like a creep thus far)
No, sorry!

Full time is 12 units per quarter. ECP isn’t a huge deal for transfers, but if you are concerned you should probably ask a counselor. The max units without petitioning for going over is 216.

I have a crappy cromebook bc I also paid for my computer myself. Its worked pretty well for me. I see Macs and Windows in everyclass, I don’t think it really makes a difference.
