UCLA Psychology Transfer Question

Hey everyone, I'm applying to UCLA in the Fall and I had a question I'm getting VERY worried about. I'm a Transfer student from West Valley College, I'm almost entirely done with my IGETC and Prep courses BUT I've had to retake some of the prep courses (Exp. Psych, Physio, and Stats)... problem is, I've had to also retake Stats twice, I messed up and took it once online and got in a bad personal situation + some computer issues and ended up failing it, took it again a year later and had more personal problems and health problems and got a D... so this Fall I'm retaking it a 3rd time and intending to pass, along with cleaning up my GPA a little. I read on the site that transfer students have to transfer as "Pre-Psych" and my situation kinda screws me... so essentially my question is am I definitely screwed or can I actually transfer under full Psychology status and you know, bypass the issues with Pre-Psych? What are my options? I've also sent an email to admissions and my grades this semester are far better (5 classes 5 As, including fixing the D in Psych 002/Exp Psych) this time around. I'm just a little panicked because I've heard UCLA has such a great Psychology dept, I don't want to have to goto a school that doesn't have a good one.

Uh, no, you can’t transfer as anything but pre-psych but if you’re in for the major you’re in… you just come here and finish the remaining UCLA requirements (3 classes or so) and are officially accepted into the major.

Really? It said on the site I’d be changed to “Undeclared” and I figured that meant I wasn’t allowed to switch to Psychology after I got in, cause they said you can only be admitted directly into Psych, and I’ll be done with all my classes by next spring, that’s why I’m waiting till the fall to request transfer, I gotta get those last few classes fixed up and boost my GPA a bit

Also (sorry for the double post) it occurs to me maybe I should also mention here that when I do finish these last two semesters that I’ll have been in a CC for 4 years, 1 at SBCC, 1 mixed from SBCC/WVC, and now 2 at WVC alone. I tried to get down to SBCC and it kinda screwed me, then I got nailed again because the financial aid office gave me bad advice (which accounts for the FIRST time I tried taking Elementary Stats online). But other than the occasional bad grade that I’m correcting by taking the classes over (and getting As and Bs the second time) I’ve done pretty well the last six semesters and I have well in the ballpark of 90+ credits. I have enough that if I took a few classes next summer I could probably transfer with an AA in Psychology and keep an AA in Liberal Arts/Film Studies off to the side.

…That can only help me, right?

you would only be changed to undeclared if you were already a ucla student and had to repeat the coursework at ucla.

You can explain your extenuating circumstances in your personal statement. Ucla uses a holistic approach when reviewing your application and they look your app collectively. Just repeating a couple of classes isn’t going to disquality you if your remaining compensating factors are excellent. Are you tap certified, do you have a competitive gpa? Do you give back to your community? Is this situation isolated and have you clearly overcome the issues that made you withdrawal in the first place? Have you sat down with a counselor at your school? It may also help to fill out a Tag agreement with your community college with other Uc’s as well: Ucsd, UcDavis etc. You said you wanted to go to a good school… All Uc’s are good schools.

good luck.

I haven’t filled out a Tag yet… my GPA well… at West Valley I’m getting somewhere around a 3.46 I think? I transferred my 2 years of online classes from SBCC and they’re evaluating them so it’ll probably drop down for a time while I get it fixed up. I’ve had an average of 1 bad class out of every 6 once a semester but I always retake it and get an A or B the second time. I talked to a counselor a few weeks ago to plan out my next semester, and I’m going tomorrow to ask some questions (the one you just answered being one of them lol) and was planning on asking about the Tag or my school’s Honors program (which says it transfers to UCLA especially and the College of Sciences, but apparantly only works under a liberal arts degree… or something like that). I did 40 hours of Community Service in High School but… not really a lot in College. Do you think there’s still time? Hopefully so. I was gonna try to work this summer and save money for a netbook (I have a HP dv9208nr with a manufacturing defect so I don’t dare take it anywhere anymore lest I put too much strain on the screen-case’s hinge), but to be safe I was also going to take out a stafford loan to pay that and some of my medical bills off and could use that time instead to volunteer and help the community. Thank you very VERY much for clearing everything up I was having kittens over here. Sorry if I’m rambling, it’s 5 am and I tend to get into tangents when I stay up late. Arigatou!!

P.S. I’m a student-affiliate of the APA and a member of Division 44, does that count for anything?

Alright I have an update – I just got back from speaking with the counselor, she says I look like I’m in good standing and I need to talk to the counselor who does the Honors program to set it up, and if I do 5 of the honors classes I can graduate “with honors” which is essentially the TAG for UCLA at my school straight into the College of L&S, and I’ll start setting that up tomorrow. I’m also gonna speak to the APA about volunteer work/internships to help boost that “giving back to the community” stat.

I talked to my counselor about this and she says you can double-dip classes… like for example taking Psych 1 to fulfill my Psych major I can also take it to fulfill an AA in Liberal Arts. I’d heard something about not being able to use the classes more than once so I got confused. Because if I can use my classes more than one time I’ll definitely have enough credits to transfer with an AA in Psych and graduate with an AA in Liberal Arts (we crunched the numbers/classes while I was there). There’s even a possibility I could leave with an AA in Film Studies and Philosophy (which I want as my Minor eventually). So I guess I wanted to double check with everyone on here that I am able to do that right? Cause I have almost 90 credits and I want something to show for 4 years lol. Thanks again everyone!!
