My previous UCM Orientation thread wasn't broad enough so....

If your coming to UCM this fall 2008, then State which Orientation you will be attending this summer. This will be a good way to meet your future "best friend" or future "roommate".

For me: July 11th

Orientation dates are:
July 11th
July 14th
July 18th
July 25th
July 28th
August 1st

If your not sure which day you will be attending then go here and get started:

www.orientation.ucmerced.edu/2.asp?uc=1&lvl2=39&contentid=15

Is it just me or is the link not working?

Hey! I just registered. I'm going on July 11th as well. Hope to see you there!

That link does not work, unless u are logged in ur UC Merced account and click orientation

I apologize for the incorrect website. Here ya go!

Orientation - Summer Orientation Dates

I haven't decided yet but if most of you guys are going on July 11, it would cool to meet some of the people on here, haha

Lets like...met somewhere....and look around Merced (erm...Well there isn't much to look at..).

Is anyone taking their parents?

I most likely will be taking one of my parents

Who else thinks it's BS that we have to pay for "orientation"? To me, it should be included in the high costs we are already paying to attend the UC.

The additional fee for a guest just sounds like another gimmick to squeeze some more money out of us. Honestly, if we can be charged so much for something that should be done as a courtesy on behalf of the school, I don't know what else we can't be charged for.

I'm sorry if my reaction seems a little dramatic but every dollar counts. My family qualifies as middle-class which translated to ZERO financial aid. And if this is common practice at all UC's, I wonder how all the parent's scrape up enough dough for these occasions.

My family is also considered middle class and I feel so bad making my parents pay 20,000+ for four years. lol But it's worth it.

For me Financial aid= unsubsidized loans!<--------"UGH!"
lol

The guest fees are a little outrageous, I agree. I don't know why they're making it cost seeing the fact that they are only providing food and from what I hear the foods not even that good. But they do have a new dinning hall so, it should be delicious.

To fusionall:
I'm not sure if all of the UC's do this so I'm made a thread in the "college life" forum so we can find out...

No one wants to hang out during orientation?

I had this same reaction when my D and I went through this process a yr. ago. After the initial meet and greet, they separate college kids from the parents. They inform each group separately about the U.C.'s expectations and policies. Answer questions that you might not want your parents to know and vice versa. During this process you get the opportunity to bond with possible future room mates. I chuckled when they discussed separation anxiety consuling for parents. They told some very funny incidents of " clingy "parents.

TerpDad-
How is your D doing at Merced? Does she have any complaints?
Im not really the "hiking/fishing" type...growing up in a city/major suburb I can't picture myself climbing rocks and stuff lol
I plan to study my butt off though....hmm
By the way, can you introduce me to some OC people? I want to get somekind of organized carpool going...

I will be honest. She applied to six colleges with about a 3.5 gpa and SAT 1850 and exemplary EC's. This all before I discovered this web site. She was rejected by all of them. She was heartbroken at the rejection. She and I felt she worked her fanny off all for naught. Like many of you, we did not even know UCM existed until they contacted us. I could not talk her into going here at first . We started looking at CSUN, CSM,CSF. I made her promise before she made up her mind to visit UCM. THe school 's ambience, the caliber of the other students compared to the other campuses listed convinced her Wise Old Dad was right! At first she complained {see Premed4life} but now she has embraced the opportunities the school offers with enthusiasm. First semester she earned 3.54 gpa. Some of the tougher classes due curve here. She is becoming involved in starting some clubs on campus Possibilities are endless!

Her room mate is from O.C , Mission Viejo Lots of kids up there are from SoCal and commute on breaks. I promised her she could transfer if she wasn't happy there . Which, Made it easier for her to admit here. She has made many friends which makes that option more and more difficult to choose.

"I can't picture myself climbing rocks and stuff lol "

No need to worry about this, Merced is bascially a plain, no hills for 50+ miles.

Terpdad: There is a difference between complaining, and informing others about the realities of UCM. Im happy to hear your daughter is having a good time here, heck I probably even know her lol. But, sadly her experience is not typical of the average UCM student.

"By the way, can you introduce me to some OC people?"

Im from the OC myself, but wont be coming back here next year
