UConn or U of SC

Hello Everyone,

I am trying to decide between the University of SC @ Columbia (Biomedical engineering major) and the University of CT (Pharmacy major). I like both majors - so this is less of a factor - but I am really trying to decide which school would be best in the long run…academically and socially. I got honors college at both. U of SC costs about 1/2 as much as UConn. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

Not sure why this post is on the Notre Dame thread…though I see that you applied to ND. Based on scanning your other posts/replies, it looks like you have very strong qualifications and have been accepted to some excellent schools (BC!) and are waitlisted at others (ND, Northeastern). It also seems like finances are an issue.

Based on that, I cannot see why you would choose UConn at twice the price of South Carolina. There might be some instances where going to a state school as an out of state student and paying higher tuition might be justifiable. But I have a hard time seeing my way to that with UConn. I also realize that you are out of state at South Carolina but seem to have gotten a much better package there.

While I can’t speak to the social aspects, to me Biomedical Engineering > Pharmacy in terms of opportunity, and South Carolina is substantially less expensive and will have all of the resources you will need (Research University, Honors College). But it is further than UConn from your home. The extra $$$ may well come in handy for graduate school.

Best of luck here! And wait to see what happens on the waitlists and $$$.

Are you saying that you’ve been accepted into SC for biomedical engineering and into UConn for pharmacy?

If so, then the choice of major is everything because these are hard majors to transfer into from another program. In addition, the pharmacy major is a 6 year program at UConn. To do anything in biomedical engineering as a career, you’re talking about more years after graduation as well, which has its own implications.

It seems to me that you have some life decisions to make.

Are both schools affordable (no loans/no hardship?)
If so, do you want to study biomedical engineering or be a pharmacist?
