UConn or UMass Amherst?

Having visited UConn a couple of times with my DS, I would definitely say that I prefer UConn’s campus. The architecture is more traditional, the campus is very well maintained and it has about 8-10k fewer students (I believe). Even though technically UConn’s campus has more acreage, a lot of that is rolling hills and pasture for cows and horses so it seems like the actual area of the campus that the students walk around seems smaller. We will also be there on 4/13th.

My DS will also have to decide between going to UConn (his top choice) and incurring 30k debt or going to UMass (that is if he can get into for Mech Eng. he is currently accepted Undeclared. We are waiting for a decision after a 2nd review of his updated stats.) with no debt.

To ambreylouise and grzyba – the Commonwealth College (honors college) at UMASS Amherst has an excellent reputation. see article from Boston Globe. Several of my older childs friends go there, Comm Coll, and feel they are getting a great education at a great cost.

ambreylouise: Are there even huge benefits about being a part of an honors college anyway? It just seems like it could be a way to foster pretentiousness, but that’s just me. But then again, it could create a sense of community since it is a smaller segment inside the actual college itself.
The new UMass dorms look really nice, but yeah, apparently UConn has a lot of new buildings too and their dorms aren’t half bad anyway.
I’m still holding out for Northeastern and possibly appealing for my aid package once I get the real sum, but it’s looking like a financial impossibility as of now. Good luck with your decision though! Being deferred is the worst; BC deferred me and it was extremely disappointing.

ConfusedMominMA: hopefully your son winds up happy with his choice! It’s so hard to decide between your top and another school that’s much easier to pay off.
The thing that I like a lot more about UConn is the fact that it has fewer students. UMass is just a jumble of confusion and it would definitely be easy to be just a number to them instead of a student.

freecycle: That definitely gave me something more to think about; perhaps I’ll look into this honors college a bit more, thanks!
