UConn v. maybe UMich

Okay so I got into UConn pretty fast OOS and it isn't really ridiculously expensive compared to the other schools I applied to.
Here's the thing I'm waiting to hear from UMichigan after a deferral, is UCONN a good place, not a consellation for maybe getting rejected (I'll know in a week or two one way or another) at UMich? What I guess I'm asking is, this is my safety school, am I going to be disappointed by the academics/people, if I have really high standards like the other schools I applied to: NOVA, Notre Dame, UMich, Northeastern.(I got waitlisted everywhere/rejected at Notre Dame/deferred at UMich).
IS UCONN GOING TO MEET MY STANDARDS OR IS IT A GLORIFIED STATE SCHOOL, CAN I BE HAPPY HERE AT MY SAFETY????

Did you get into the honors college or anything?

UConn has high standards, and it ascending very quickly in rankings. The professors are very dedicated, and are leaders in their fields. The researchers are also professors here. You will not be disappointed.

oh my gosh, KMO i am in the EXACT same position as you. i was accepted into UConn Honors a long time ago as my semi-safety, waitlisted at BC (which is my top choice) and i have yet to hear from UMich. I have the exact same feelings as you and same questions... is UConn going to be a disappointment? can i be happy??

Without honors either way: go with Michigan. But I'd go with UConn Honors over regular U of M.

Uconn is a very growing public research university and I think you guys would do very good there. They have too many choices in academics and the professors are really top in their fields. You should definately consider attending uconn. It's the top public university in New England.

thanks for the input, no I didn't get in honors, but I got accepted basically very quickly and I guess my stats are in the 70-80th percentile there, I'm going to the open house this weekend, so I suppose that's when I'll really know if it's gonna be okay, maybe you should go too number7. Then you'll know for sure if it's going to be a disasppointment or not (I've never been to UConn actually!)

I'm not trying to say I'm too good for UConn or anything pretentious like that at all. I'm not downplaying UConn at all, it is a great school or I wouldn't have applied.I probably will be there, but I just wanted to see if anyone felt strongly negatively towards it, luckily no one really did! It's just that whole complex of "going to the safety school" that is kind of a little bit of a let down no matter how good the school is I guess!

KMO i am going to the open house this weekend as well! and i've never been there either. and i also do not feel like i am too good for UConn or anything like that, its just the idea of going to the safety school as you said. but hopefully this weekend will change both of our minds

yeah! hopefully the weather will be ok

I think it really depends on the program as well. Umich for engineering has much more prestige, while Uconn's pharmacy/bio programs are probably just as good if not better than Umich's.

I definitely feel for you KMOin06. I got rejected from my top choice schools (Duke, Dartmouth) and initially applied to Uconn as a safety. Although I got into RPI and WPI, I think that Uconn has lots of opportunities that the others lack. I think it will work out for the best if I enroll at Uconn* (and I won't be in complete debt when I graduate)

**plus, did I mention it has an 75-80% medical school acceptance rate? Seems really good for a public school (national average=50% of all students that every apply to medical school get rejected)

UConn actually has about a 50% acceptance rate for med school. It has for many years now and only about 50 or so people apply per year out of 3500 students per class.

really? Thats interesting. I recently went to the program for valedictorians and salutatorians and the assistant vice-provost of the honors program said that Uconn has about a 75-80% medical school acceptance rate. She also said that Uconn pays to have lecturers from Uconn's medical school come and give lectures on medical school topics every so often to Storrs campus students.

I guess you could be right, but it makes me wonder where you are getting your information from. I hightly doubt that she would lie to potential students, but I guess it is possible.

Theres a website with all the stats. Pm me and ill give it to you. Has all the past 5 years applicants GPAs MCATs how many schools they applied to, where they got in, and where they went. And it is 50%. The person was just wrong, maybe for the honors program its that high, for the University as a whole it is not.
And yes they do have lots of talks with people from the med school, as a matter of fact there is one this upcomming week.

if you can, please PM me the website with stats as well, or just post it on the thread.

yeah i would like to see that site as well

ditto here
