Hello, so the time has come for me to finally choose the college I want to go to. Now the only problem is right now the cost of each colleges/universities. So far I have been admitted into Hofstra's business program and they gave me a scholarship for a total of four years of 60k. Now if I stay in NY, I can commute in which I can save money and probably find internships at the city for my major in business management. I really want to go to Uconn but the problem is the cost and the fact that I live out of state. I got into their aces program at storrs but did not receive any financial aid yet. I heard its really hard to transfer into their business program but I am willing to try my best to get in there. Now the sunys that i got accepted to were the following business management program at University at buffalo, business at Albany and lastly New Paltz. I am probably going to transfer out during my second year at college to NYU if I can achieve that goal depending on how hard it is to accomplish that task and was wondering if its worth to even go to uconn or hofstra. Now my only main question is, is it worth going to uconn or hofstra for their business program? I am going to their open house this Saturday and will be looking forward to the campuses.

My opinion is that the SUNYs are great deals. I think UB is one of the most underated schools around. You will get to live the dream of going to an away campus with excellent facilities near a fairly large city, enjoy campus life, all of those goodies for la little over $20K a year, studying exactly what you want. What’s the problem with that? If UB is too big, Albany’s program is excellent with state capital opportunities and New Paltz is in a gorgeous area and is a small state school where again, you get a lot of bang for the buck.

If you can transfer to NY after a couple of years, good for you. You’ll have had two solid years of on campus living the American college dream. Bear in mind, you’d then be coming home and NY tuition is going to be double the full cost of going to a SUNY. What can you afford? What can your family afford? First business lesson here.

The only problem with UB is that it is way too far. An 8 hour drive there is way too much for me. My parents told me they were going to pay for every year its just I don’t want to be a burden for them if the cost is way too much.Probably 30k a year will be the most I’ll accept from my parents. The thing I’m looking for is a big community and connections I can find when I’m in college. The thing about Uconn is that it is listed in the top 100 business school and the fact that it is just a huge campus, now the only problem is the cost which troubles me a lot because I still dont know how much I have to pay as of yet. @cptofthehouse

bump

Bumpppp

The China town bus will take you to Buffalo for cheap and the train goes up there too. Enough downstaters go there that getting a ride from someone once you get to know people and use the ride board, is no big deal. Albany is about the same distance as UConn, and it’s also a good bet for business.

if it’s over budget, UConn is not worth the extra. Not in this case.

@cptofthehouse that really doesnt sound bad now what im wondering is about hofstra. Approximately ill have to pay around 25k a year*commuting) which is the same price as University at Buffalo and Albany. Would it be a good choice to attend here?

I was very impressed with UB. Extremely underrated. Classe, materials, prof, amenities, facilities, all first rate, and I do look at a lot of schools. I did not go there looking to be impressed at all, and had to give it high points. It has a lot of student employment opportunities for part time work and after freshman year, a lot of kids live off campus on the cheap as there is plenty of cheap housing available. A very strong student ghetto presence. Fix your own meals and you can save a lot. You’ll be in good company with grad, prof and ug students all scrimping to get by.

I cannot personally give you much info on Albany, but a friend of mine decided after much agony to send her second one there. They paid quite a bit for RPI for the first, and he reported that he could have done just as well–shared lots of internships with SUNY kids from there, at SUNY Albany, and a visit made the student himself say it was a toss up to him. Friend is a school snob and they could have afforded either. The SUNYs have good reps from those who know. Being in the state capital does give Albany some opportunities for experience and jobs, I hear, and the business dept is excellent. SUNY, CUNY schools are top rated for business and are the few schools certified in specific areas for international standards. A lot of other schools, including pricey privates with big names are not. You have to look at all of these things. I have know idea what certs UConn has, for example. When looking at accountig, which I did check, I know the NY state schools are way up there.

I do like Hofstra a lot, but you will get the full university experience with dorms, living away from parents, getting a place in the student slums, all for the same price at UB. I’m not trying to sell you but am laying out the facts as I see them.

I think among your choices UB >UAlabany >>>> Hofstra (based on your stated criteria).

you are aware that UB ranks 40 on forbes list of best business schools? I’m a student there, in the management school, and I couldn’t recommend it more. The campus is lively, insanely big, and all students are some of the most hardworking, friendly people you will meet.

well guys thanks for the comments im actually going to give buffalo a try and visit their campus thank you again!

visited UCONN and wow their campus was amazing!! Visited Hofstra huge campus too now waiting on going to UB this week, If i decide to go to UB which of their dorms are the best? Does being in the business management program matter or no?

How much would UConn cost?

@myos1634 since i didnt receive any financial aid Im probably going to have to pay around 50k a yearwhich is way over my parents budget…

Then Uconn is out.

Thanks for pointing out the obvious

Well, until now it sounded like you still hesitated. Glad to be of help by pointing out the obvious contradiction between budget and costs (50K>30K :p)
Suny Buffalo or Albany are probably your best deals - unless your parents truly have the money for UConn and don’t mind spending that much on you in spite of your misgivings, which one do you like best.

So I visited Ubuff and I loved it there!! I payed for my fee and dorm and now I’m going to attend there and I’m very satisfied thanks @cptofthehouse. Btw does anyone know any cheap airline service, train or bus? I am going to their summer freshman orientation and I dont know how to get there cheaply thanks guys!

So, what did you like at UBuffalo? How was it different from the others?
:)
