<p>Is your son looking for large universities?
This may be just a personal bias but unless there is a compelling elite program not available in my own state system, I'm not willing to pay out-of-state prices for a large state school.
That being said, my own two are at medium sized (~4500) private universities for a tad more $ than out-of-state state schools. They benefit from smaller class sizes and sense of community. One even has a nice merit package.</p>
