UCR Biology major

Congratulations! You have been admitted to the major of Biology in the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences for Fall 2019. You will be receiving your official admission notification packet in the mail soon.
Guys i got accepted in Biology major when i initially applied i don’t think UCR had specific biological science major i’m a pre med student, so i this the right major to be in sorry if this is a silly question.

PS this is what it says under biological science:
The Biological Sciences major is currently under a moratorium and no new change of major petitions to this major will be approved at this time. Please consider the remaining life science majors such as Biochemistry; Biology; Entomology; Neuroscience; Plant Biology; Cellular, Molecular and Developmental Biology; or Microbiology.

You are admitted into the Biological Sciences major and then you can take a specialization track.

Students who are completing a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences must choose a track from the following list:
Bioinformatics & Genomics
Biology
Cell, Molecular, and Developmental Biology
Conservation Biology
Environmental Toxicology
Evolution and Ecology
Medical Biology
Microbiology
Plant Biology

UCR has no “pre-med” major. You can major in any area of interest.

@Gumbymom thank you so much, what confused me is that they have a tab saying biological science itself: https://cnasstudent.ucr.edu/majors/biology.html and then right underneath is biology whats the difference?

Biological Sciences is the general major where all accepted students take the same Pre-req courses and then you pick your specific track where you would take those specific upper division classes.

Here is the link of the required classes for all Biological Sciences majors: https://cnasstudent.ucr.edu/files/Minimum%20Progress%20Criteria%20Biol.pdf

And then if you want to specialize in the Biology track, you would take those classes listed under Biology.

If you decide on Microbiology, then you take those specific classes or one of the other tracks.

@Gumbymom you’re great help thank you

@Gumbymom do you think I would be able to switch from Microbiology to a different life science major then if they are all correlated to biological science?

I would check with your academic advisor during orientation but I would think that since all the Biological science majors take the same pre-req’s it should not be an issue.
