Okay, so just browsing through this forum, I've noticed a lot of people worried about the location of UCR. Personally, as a UCR student, this is what I've noticed:

People I see who complain about the location usually tend to have too much free time on their hands for being in college. OR they get sucked into the party/frat/sorority scene then get placed on Academic Probation or Subject to dismissal - Then magically (for 1 quarter) stop complaining about location, but rather start complaining about life and the rigors of being a college student or how their professors are stupid etc. Then once they are off the list, it goes back to complaining about location.

People I see who DONT complain about location seem to either be: really smart. Like sleeps in the library, pulls all nighters all the time, upholds conversations about life, school, politics and education instead about which frats shunned another frat. Or which sorority is filled with *****es and whores. Or they are really involved with school, whether it is a club (not a frat or sorority) or being involved in student government.

So, I guess what Im trying to say is, if anyone else notices the same correlations I do? Yes, I am generalizing but that's human nature and plus, our school is famous for being overgeneralized anyways (like UCRejects, referral school, etc). No harm in adding another generalization right?

your generalizations about greek organizations is rather offputting. I’m in a fraternity (and the webmaster), vice president and events coordinator for the condom co-op, an officer for an honors society, actively involved in lgbtrc stuff, and an honors student. I have maintained above a 3.7 gpa for all three quarters ive been at ucr. i love ucr and know it’s a wonderful school, but yeah the location, not so good. we’re the 24th most dangerous college campus in america, the water quality is terrible, I’m seven hours away from home, and there is nothing to do around campus unless i have a car. i was least bored with the location of riverside when i was pledging and therefore had the most time commitment to my frat. even though i get bored with the area, i rarely complain about ucr cause i know it’s a great school and im happy with being here, largely because im involved in a fraternity, and i don’t really complain about academics either, cause i’ve been getting on the dean’s list every quarter without too much effort. i got off on a few tangents, but my point is, 1. it’s legitimate to say the location sucks, 2. don’t bash on all greek orgs especially if you don’t know what you’re talking about. I’ve in a fraternity, I’ve never been on AP, I must be really smart to be doing so well, I won a scholarship for my activism, and now im sounding braggy…but that wasn’t the point. yeah.

I apologize if my generalizations about greek life was rather offputting, but its not like I dont know what Im talking about. Sure there are greek frats but there are also those asian frats who arent really greek. I applaud you for all your extra curricular but in your argument, you sort of agreed to my correlation, you said “i rarely complain about ucr cause i know it’s a great school and im happy with being here,” I never argued that the people who didnt complain about location were satisfied with it. Like you, they dont really have time to complain, dont care about location or like the school. Trust me, I come from the OC, so Riverside is not paradise compared to where I live.

And although Im generalizing for greek life, it is no lie - almost everyone correlates parties with frats and sororities. Sure there are specific frats for majors and also honors societies (Im in one myself). Im not bashing greek life. Im making an observation with peoples attitudes and the role greek life seems to play.

So to wrap up - 1. I know its legitimate to say location sucks. Im simply pointing out an observation about who complains about location and what type of student they are and making a correlation. Obviously, you are a successful student and you said yourself you dont really complain about UCR

I never bashed greek orgs - but lets not lie, IN GENERAL (not specifically the one you are in) they play a role when it comes to the party scene in colleges

Congratulations on you scholarship, internship and deans list:) Im active in student life too and hope to receive something like that and I made it to deans list this year as well

P.S - you guys need more condoms, it always runs out when I try to get one

lolll really? we have a ton! come up and ask us. there might not be any on the table, but we keep a big stash underneath the table. we just like to force people to talk to us before freely handing them out. =P

and as for your main point, which I think i kind of overlooked initially, yeah most of the people who complain about ucr aren’t taking advantage of all the great opportunities ucr has to offer. which is really kind of sad imo, cause i personally think four years isn’t enough time to be able to take advantage of all the opportunities there are. there’s just too much great stuff to do. =]

Just wanted to say that this thread makes me happy. I’m originally from Riverside County and went to ASU for a year, hated the scene, and now I’m transferring into UCR. I know the location isn’t the most glamorous and I know that people think it’s a “reject school”, but the people I’ve talked to that are really involved on-campus all seem to enjoy their time there. I think people need to understand that complaining will get them nowhere - UCR is a great school and, like most other colleges, the best way to really enjoy it is to get involved.

I know I loved the campus vibe when I toured, and I’m really excited to explore my club options See you guys there!

Dude, UCR’s location sucks. Get over it, and stop trying to justify it. Just because one is smart or sleeps in the library, doesn’t make it any less sucky. I’ve lived here in Riverside for over 5 years. There is NOTHING here of great interest, and you know what? I’m okay with that. I don’t need to lie to myself or make claims that it’s some interesting place, it’s not.

The school itself however, is great. For those who want to get social. Join some of the clubs, the UCR campus is plenty bountiful when it comes to student organizations. Many of the clubs also have sister clubs at other UC campuses, which they do inter-UC gatherings/events at. Also, remember, San Diego, Orange County and LA are only an hour drive or so away.

synatribe, I’ve also seen many smart people complaining about the school as well. They not only complain about the location, but they also complain about the unmotivated students at UCR. They are nice and chill, but there are a lot of people who don’t really care about learning. Smart people at UCR don’t really seem to complain about academics, reputation, or teacher, but they complain about studying with or being surrounded by a group of unmotivated students. That’s why many people tend to transfer out of UCR to go to a better school. However, I believe it really depends on what kind of people you are hanging out with. So, not everyone at UCR is unmotivated. But now that UCR acceptance rate is 62%, I’m sure there will be smarter people coming in to UCR and that’s what makes the school better.

I grew up in the IE, so I am used to this area. All of my friends who are not attending schools far away are either going to UCR or community colleges in the surrounding area (Valley, Crafton, or RCC). Because of this, all of my friends are going to be around and I will never run out of activities to do. Take advantage of it. That is like saying there is so much to do in SD but you never do anything because you don’t branch yourself out. Trust me, there is something to do. There always is. Whether it is legal or not, aha.

I’ve lived in Riverside for 17 years, so yes, I’m pretty familiar with what there is to do. But for those complaining that they seem to be finding themselves stuck with nothing to do on their free time, just improvise and make the most of out what you got. Lol, I know that’s way too general, but hey, its certainly not the worst, just try to come up with your own ways of being occupied.

hot as HELL. you don’t necessarily have to NOT like the school to not like the location. I like the school, but the location SUCKS. why be in denial?

It is all subjective. Some people do not like the heat, but I love it. Plus, if you lived in the surrounding area, it will not be “horrible.” Make new friends. Friends are what make university entertaining…Unless you plan to do all of these activities by yourself.
