why does UCR get so much hate?

I don't get it.. its a UC so i figure its a good school. I have a couple of friends who go there who have no complaints. However all I see online if bad reviews of the school… I am applying this fall..and I do understand the location is horrible(my spouse is dreading moving here IF i get in)..but is it really such a bad school? I mean if you had only the choice between going to UCR or a CSU which would you choose?

It’s the location honestly. Merced and Riverside are both in crappy locations and I think that’s the reason they get so much hate. Would you rather have a crappy apartment next to the beach or a mansion in the middle of nowhere?

UCR is actually ranked well for sciences and for business. I think part of the reason it is not a top choice among students is the location. The UCR campus is pretty, but the surrounding area is not great. There is not as much to do in the area as there is at other UC campuses. There is definitely no shame in attending UCR and you will get a very good education there!

I’ll echo what’s been said about location. Nothing against the school honestly, but Riverside as a city (county) just sucks.

As others have said, it’s all about location. Riverside is hot and boring. But if that doesn’t bother you, then UCR is an excellent school to transfer to, especially if you’re majoring in a STEM field.

Personally, I’d rather go to my local CSU than UCR, though. I wouldn’t want to go too far to transfer when I could stay in LA. :P

I figured it was all because of the location, i have to admit its in the middle of nothing/nowhere

Yep location. Kinda hot weather and nothing really to do locally. But look on the bright side, it’s an hour drive to New Port Beach, an hour drive to Big Bear mountains, and an hour drive to LA. Which is good, you shouldn’t be out having fun around the local area when you should be studying 80% of the time of the week.

Never heard any complaints from students that currently attend UCR
