Hi. I am debating between UCR and SDSU right now. I would really prefer going to SDSU because its a more respected school, located in san diego and because they offer the better program for my major business, accounting. However, SDSU is pretty expensive and if i were to go there, I would have to take out about 8k in loans in order to attend that school. But if i go to UCR, I can save money. I will live at home here in san bernardino so i will commute to school. Cal grant A will cover my tuition and fees and the pell grant can pay for the rest of the things books, supplies etc. What should I do? Go to sdsu and have a great education in a great city? or go to ucr and save money but earn a degree in business admininstration with a minor in accounting only. and ucr is also a school that is not well respected.
Please reply I need help!
P.S Can I get a good job in a place like san diego or orange county with a degree from UCR?

8k each year for four years for a total of 32k? Then probably No.

8k total over the course of four years? Then probably Yes.

You can only borrow up to the maximum Stafford each year, so you can’t get 8k each year. You would need co-signers for the difference.

Why do you believe that SDSU is “more respected” than UCR? Have you spoken with the two departments to find out about job placement? Have you compared the specific course offerings to find out just exactly which courses you would miss by attending UCR? Are they necessary to prepare you for the CPA exam? If so, can you pick them up by enrolling for one summer at SDSU?

There is no reason to believe that you can’t get a job in the places that you would like to work with a degree from UCR. Who has told you that?

^ Great response.

Well as for the cost, it would be about 8k each year if i would live on campus all 4 years which i dont plan on doing. However, I have applied to several private scholarships but they’re not guaranteed…I have spoken to several students who have attended UCR. Most of them have told me that the education is good but that it gets really boring after class. The hot weather and high pollution discomforts many students their as they have told me that they would consider transferring. As for the major, ucr only offers accounting as a minor whereas sdsu offers it as a major and it is accredited by the AACSB. As for the other part, I would like to live in some place like san diego because i love the city life and the weather is great! There are a lot more businesses, companies, firms over their so I have been told that it would be easier for me to land a job over their in san diego. I was told that people who graduate from sdsu get first priority first jobs in san diego over other people who live elsewhere. what would u recommend?

The hot weather and high pollution in Riverside is really only a problem during the summer. The Santa Anas push the pollution back toward the coast in the later fall until late spring.

Why do you think that SDSU is more respected than UCR? I HIGHLY doubt that’s true.

Forget the debt…go to UCR.

SDSU has the highest rated undergrad business dept after Berkeley - in CA. It is simply head and shoulders better than UCR. Unless things have changed, be careful about admission to SDSU’s Biz Dept - most students must go through 2 years of pre-reqs with very high GPA requirements to get into the Business School the junior year.
If you have guaranteed admission to UCR’s Business school, it may be worth saving the $32k. Overall, SDSU’s undergrad business school is a Best Buy for an In State student. San Diego is also the best city in the universe (well, after Santa Barbara).

???

Based on WHAT??? Not US News ranking…

UCR’s undergrad business program is ranked number 55 in the nation. That is very good. Nothing to worry about.

BTW…SDSU’s undergrad business program is ranked #81 in the nation…BELOW UC Riverside.

Ouch, I stand corrected. Things have changed - UCR wasn’t considered much of a school when I was in CA. I got my info from an SDSU Biz Alum.
The rest I confirm personally - SD is beautiful. $8k/year more beautiful than Riverside is a family decision.

Ucr > sdsu

SDSU is a party school - go to UCR

I honestly have never heard “SDSU” and “better education” in the same sentence before this thread lol.

So it turns out that UCR does not offer my major Accounting. So I have decided to go to CSU San Bernardino for my first two years and then transfer to either CSU Fullerton or San Diego State because of their excellent accounting programs. I made this decision based on my major and in order to save money. My family is low-income so I cant afford to go anywhere expensive. BTW csu san bernardino offers accounting as well if things dont work out with the other two.
