When i applied to UC i only applied to UCSB, UCSD, Cal, and UCLA but a few days ago i got an e-mail from UCR basically saying that even though i didn't apply they want me too and that they would wave the 60 dollar fee, they gave me a link and a number, i called and all i had to give them was my name and application id and they said they would add UCR to my application or whatever.... did anyone else get this?

i dont know if this is true, but i heard UCR didn't get enough people to apply this year.

im not too sure how accurate that is though...

i think that this happened cuz the other uc(s) sent ur info to UCR...it happens every year according to some of my older friends so don't worry about it

yeah, i don't think that they got enough apps (they do get alot, but not enough pple choose to attend) , esp if they had the time to give out acceptances by Feb 1st and the fact that they keep on extending their deadlines

There were two UC's this year that received LESS applications than last year. They were UC Riverside (19,000 and change) and UC Santa Cruz (24,000 and change). The Fall 2007 application stats are now posted. See them at

plus, over half the candidates that apply end up attending some other school because they use ucr as a fall back. im suprised ucm didnt do this? did they?

I don't think Merced is doing this. This year it is guaranteeing admission to all UC eligible students who apply. There is still time to apply, but they received a healthy number of applicants for a new school, and are busy building additional housing to open Fall of 2007, and while housing is guaranteed first year, they are now growing so fast they are not guaranteeing second year, which is a shame, since the dorms they already have built that are occupied are the best dorms (actually, they are apartment like suites) of all the UC campuses I've visited.

wait, so basically, UCR is accepting anyone who applies there? (that is eligible) I applied and i still havent gotten an admissions descision yet, and its been more than 2 weeks since they began admitting applicants.

uh no, they accept ~80% of the people that apply there. they are just trying to get more applications so they can give out more acceptances, and the more acceptances the more people will ultimately go there, giving them $$$ and whatnot. Im pretty sure UCLA did this last year as i got somethin like that for engineering.

mofom I was talking about Merced, not Riverside, sorry for the misunderstanding.

yes. The UC's have an obligation to CA residents and right now they promise a UC to any applicant who fulfills the basic standarsd for appylign to a UC (3.0 uw, etc). so UCM is accepting anyone i believe who fullfills requiremtnes and UCR accepts quite a few not only for app money but they have to send out huge numbers of acceptances becuase UCR Is not a first choice for most applicants.

I think, before UCM, you also had to be in the top 4% of high school students to be guaranteed acceptance. UCM is just trying to fill out their numbers and grow at this point.

I'm afraid that it might be something that riverside sends out to applicants who didn't get into the other schools that they applied too... at first when i got the e-mail i was happy about it because i thought, hey they must want me to go there, but now that i have sat and thought about it i'm afraid that they only sent it to fulfill the guaranteed admission to one uc school to all eligible students... anyone else get this or know why they send it?

I got it. I'm thinking the same thing ColtenHall. I guess we just have to wait and see what happens. I'd like to think I'm looking too much into it!

turns out i was looking too much into it, i got into the school i want Santa Barbara so i guess it was just a good thing!

ucr seems to offer a very good financial aid package. i would def go but i got into sdsu so im going there.

They're waving your $60 fee? No fair...I applied to it for my safety WITH the $60...haha, I'm thinking that maybe if I had chosen not to apply, they might have sent me the same email and offered to waive my fee =P

If it makes you feel any better, I would've chosen UCR as a safety and I haven't gotten any mail from them at all except this one really old email about how I could still apply ><

I just got an e-mail today which asked me to apply.

I got a letter in the mail today that was from Merced, same thing as Riverside's offer.. free to add Merced yada yada yada.. pretty odd, good thing i didn't apply in the first place cuz i'd be out 120 dollars for nothing. =]

Weird. I applied to UCR and got in, and today, i got an email from them telling me to apply as well.
