UCR vs San Jose State for Business

I’m nearing the deadline to commit. I can’t decide where to go or which is better for me. My 3rd choice is Cal Poly Pomona but I think I’d rather go to UCR or SJSU. I’m just not sure which pros outweigh which cons. I’m finding so many mixed things said about the schools. Overall, I just need some unbiased help since I need to commit soon. I also haven’t been able to go visit the campus. I’ve only done virtual and heard things from friends. Which school do you think would be better academically/ give me more opportunity later on? I do plan to do more school after.

All 3 are very good options for a Biz student. Each (like all colleges) has their pluses and minuses but offer credible degrees. I think that’s why you are having a tough time ruling them out. I’d suggest that you move forward knowing that none is a Bad choice. Visit all 3 while school is in session, take the tour and talk to current students about their experience, likes and dislikes. Anonymous opinions on an internet bulletin board and virtual tours can only take you so far. The cost is a drop in the bucket of college tuition and a visit is really is the best way to figure out which is best for YOU.

UCR admits you into the Pre-Bus Admin major and you have to take the pre-req courses with maintaining a specific GPA before you can officially declare the major so one hurdle that SJSU or CPP does not have. Something to consider.

**Pre-Business is a two-year program to prepare students to apply to Business Administration. (The Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration is only offered at UC Riverside, UC Irvine, and UC Berkeley.) Students who enter UCR as freshmen initially enroll and are advised in the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences in a Pre-Business status. The College breadth requirements and the prerequisites for Business Administration major are completed during the freshman and sophomore years. An application to Business Administration is submitted at the end of the sophomore year. Upon acceptance, students become Business Administration majors and are then advised in the Business Administration Department in the School of Business Administration.

Pre-Business students must attend a Business Administration Workshop in order to submit the Business Administration Application electronically the quarter in which the College breadth and lower division Business Administration prerequisites are being completed. Students must apply to Business Administration by the time 90 units are completed. Any exceptions must have the prior approval of the Assistant Dean in the School of Business Adminstration.

Effective FALL 2012, a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 is required with a minimum 2.5 GPA in the combined GPA of the General Business Prerequisites and lower division Business requirements. This GPA requirement affects freshmen entering FALL 2012 and after.

The UC degree might have more name recognition outside of California if you are thinking you might live/work somewhere else after you graduate. Tough choice but no bad options!

All good options (SJSU & CPP more cost effective)… However, as a UC Riverside Highlander alumnus with a Business Administration Degree I’m partial to UCR…
Very good Top 100 US News ranked Business Admistration program where I received a great education/college experience!

SJSU’s close physical proximity to Silicon Valley gives you an edge on jobs in the area, especially high tech.

The 2.7 UCR GPA requirement is a minimum for consideration and application. In reality, with competition to get into a UC undergraduate business school, it is probably higher, say in the low 3.0+. Like another poster mentioned, UC’s are well known and recognized schools in the country and good for jobs and applying for advance degrees. If you decide on UCR business, prepare to have a backup plan in case you do not get in when you apply as a junior. A few years ago, in a tour of the UCR campus, I asked a director of the UCR business school admission why the GPA is so low (low 3 though stated minimum GPA was 2.7) to get into business school compared to the GPA of the other 2 UC undergraduate business schools (Haas and Merage). He said many UCR applicants have trouble with calculus. I think if your pre-business GPA is in the low 3’s, you should get into UCR’s undergraduate business school plus the competition to get in is not as hard as other UC’s. You might want to talk to people or even the business school admission office to check if the GPA for accepted students has gone up higher or not.
