UCR vs SJSU vs CPP vs ASU for advertising/marketing

My DD is trying to decide between UCR/CPP/SJSU/ASU. She thinks marketing program at ASU is pretty good, She also got 12k scholarship at ASU and many other out of state schools too.

She is wait listed at UCSC and UW. She has UW : 3.84, W: 4.07. Took 2 AP classes only. In-state Calfornia.

She is leaning towards picking school closer to home hence I am not sure she will consider other schools that she got in like Purdue, UPItt, MSU and UO

She is interested advertising/Marketing, says doesn’t enjoy math but she did quite well until things went wrong senior year. At UCR she received Honors invite but she is offered Pre-Business and then has to apply for Business administration at end of 2nd year. I am not sure how easy or tough it is to get into BA. If anyone can offer advise or point to right thread, that will really help.

I also do not want her to goto a very competitive school and be in stressful environment. Last two years at her high school were very rough that impacted her mental health. She ended up dropping her AP classes in senior year and moved to regular classes. She is yet to inform the schools (this week) and is also worried if they rescind the offers. Any recommendation on whether to fill the online form for schedule change or contact the admissions office and write a letter?

@Gumbymom Any advise on selecting the schools (mentioned int he title) will be good keeping her schedule change in mind. We are engineers and didn’t goto school in this country, cant offer much help. Money is not a constraint, we are willing to fund any school she chooses. Just need right environment where she can succeed and not have to repeat her experience at high school.

Thank you for reading!

All are good options for Business/Marketing/Advertising but I have no specific knowledge of the CA school programs and how they compare to ASU.

Out of the CA schools, UCR’s Business Admin program has a very good reputation. You might want to contact the Business school directly and find out the advising department (951) 827-3683 and find out the success rate of Pre-Business majors getting into the full major before committing.

Thank you @Gumbymom. Leaving ASU, CPP from the mix, how do you compare UCR vs SJSU school/program/opportunities wise?

Contact the schools as soon as possible to find out if they will make a decision on that matter before May 1. Otherwise, if she matriculates to a school that rescinds admission after May 1, her only choice may be to start at community college and work on the transfer pathway.

Thank you @ucbalumnus We will be doing that this week. Should we fill the online form and then call the school with the explanation? What is the best way to let them know of the hardships she faced this year that lead to dropping her courses.

You probably want to do it the way the school wants you to do it, then contact the school additionally to see if you can get an answer before May 1 and include any other relevant information.

Both schools are AACSB accredited.

AACSB-Accredited Schools
Accredited institutions have met rigorous standards and are committed to upholding and advancing the quality of their business and accounting programs.

I would compare the curriculum’s and especially the marketing/advertising courses available.

Have you visited both schools? Very different campus vibes due to locations.

SJSU has the location advantage in regards to internships and future jobs since it is located in the city.

UCR has a more commuter feel than many of the UC’s since many local students will go home for the weekend. It is a smaller UC campus, more laid back vs intense or competitive.

Also I would look at the career center for each school and see what employers recruit from each school.

Your D needs to find her best fit so these are only suggestions to help her make that decision.

Thank you we just realized she reported the new courses on her applications correctly (since she changed them at the beginning months of school year) but the transcript sent form school was not updated. It still shows AP courses for 12th grade.

Not sure which one do colleges look at? Application or transcript as source of truth? I will still call them today.

Thank you @Gumbymom. She visited SJSC and liked it, planning UCR visit soon(they are on spring break currently).

Courses wise she liked SJSC better bcos she applied advertising in SJSC and BA in UCR(they only have marketing focus) . SJSC has lot of options for courses and seem easier to get classes.

She checked and said both have good lineup of companies listed on career center but you are right SJSC have more. Internship opportunities seem to be superior at SJSC as well.

So far she is leaning towards SJSC unless he comes off the waitlist at UCSC which is for another day:-)

Thank you so much, appreciate the quick response.

You may want to check with the high school about making sure that the final transcript will be correct.

She should be ok for UCR since the UC schools don’t ask for transcripts until you are accepted. Did she have to send preliminary transcripts for the CSU schools?

Yes that will be accurate. We spoke to them.
