UCs: Applying as Undeclared or not?

I know the UC websites all say that it does not matter which major you go into, but the college you want to get into (such as Letters and Science), but is it entirely true?
I know for sure I want to do something in the biological sciences such as Biochemistry, but it is competitive at certain UCs. Even if I do not get into Biochem, I would not mind going into another major involving the biological sciences.

So, should I just put Biochemistry down as my major or put Undeclared-Biological Sciences?

Will it make a difference? I just don't want my chances lowered because I picked a competitive major.

I'm applying to UCB, UCLA, UCSB, UCD, and UCSD.

My son is putting undeclared to UCB and UCLA. Then selecting the exact majors that he wants for UCD, CSSD and UCB. This is because my son has marginal scores.

I don’t think anyone knows whether it would make a difference as each year the stats are different. As an example, if this year most of the biologically inclined applicants select the biotechnology and have higher scores than yours, then undeclared option make sense.
Good Luck with you application!
