UCs/Cal Polys - chances?

Hey there, guys.

I can't get much clarification on the admissions procedures for colleges, especially the UC's, and i'd really like to know my chances of getting in. It's kinda ironic though, because it's really hard to determine through fact alone. If someone could tell me whether i have a chance at any of these schools, it'd be awesome.

so here are the one's i applied to :
UCI
UCR
UCSD
UCLA
UC Berkeley
Cal Poly San Luis Obsipo

i didn't bother applying to ivies because they're rather expensive, and near impossible to get into.

my weighted (5.0 scale) GPA is a 3.8
my UC/CalState GPA is a 3.42
First semester senior year GPA - 3.67 unweighted
4.43 weighted

SAT I - 2100 [i got the score twice out of three attempts]
Math - 780 740
Reading - 670 640
Writing - 650 720

SAT II
Math IIc - 780
English Literature - 740

AP
Computer Science A - 5
European History - 3
Computer Science AB - 5
US History - 3
Music Theory - 4
Calculus - planned
French - planned
English - planned
Environmental Science - planned

I'm a National Merit Finalist [i'm pretty sure about this]
I'm also a full IB diploma candidate.

Oh, I'm a California resident, by the way.

I don't know how much is factored into the decision in terms of extracurriculars, but if they're needed to make a better assessment, I can tell you. I do have alot of extracurriculars though, or so i think.

I never understood which GPA they refer to, when they mention the 'average GPA' of admitted persons into the school, because UC's only weight 8 semesters. I've taken about 8 or so full-year honors classes in my 10th and 11th grades.

Also, I don't know how much the senior year plays a role in your selection, but I've kept my curriculum challenging by taking all the honors classes I could get into [that's why my GPA is semi-low. Too challenging, i guess.]

I don't know. It'd be nice if I could get some speculation. Thanks alot guys.

and if there's anything else you need to know, ask and i'll tell.

thanks!

I understand you have completed 5 Ap's so far...meaning the UC's would only accept 4 of them...don't worry too much about senior year...and for CSU and UC only look at junior and sophmore year...so hopefully once you taken 9th grade out the GPA will go higher...and also the UCS/CSU's basically plug in all your weighted grades into a calculator and thats how they judge if you're in or not...you don't have anything to worry about...I think your courseload is too hard senior year...relax a bit :] and a BIG plus for CSU is they only look at math and verbal for SAT...which means 1520/1600 is a damn good score!

now depends on your major, but :

UCI: Safety
UCR: Safety
UCSD: match
UCLA and Berkely- really depends on what your EC's are...but most likely your in for at least one of them....
Cal Poly: most likely in...as long as your not majoring in architecture

you have done well....good luck with everything!

A 3.4 getting into UCLA/UCB and you say he's "in for at least one of them"?

First of all, 90% of the people are either accepted at both or neither. Second, a 3.4 would make UCB and UCLA reaches.

ilikedonuts:

UCB/UCLA: Reach
UCSD: Slight Reach
UCI: Match
UCR: Safe Match

I believe CSU takes freshman year into account.

UCB: reach
UCLA: reach
UCSD: match
UCI: match
CP: match

thank you guys for your input. yeah. i guess that's a little disappointing, but i'll have to wait till next month to find out whether i'm into any colleges or not. =). i can only hope that UCLA accepts me, but it seems like i'll have an easier time getting into UCSD.

i wish march 1st would come sooner.

lol I know...but i was implying that he might have calculated his GPA wrong!

look at the other GPA...3.8

thats why he is atleast competent for UCLA...not in...but competent...if he has good ec's

nope. i didn't calculate my GPA wrong. i just took a TON of honors classes sophomore and junior year.

i have 13 years of piano, did the whole piano certification program and passed thie highest level. I also did various piano community service things, i played piano in two choir performances, and was secretary of a chamber music club at my school. on top of that i did a 150-hour internship at boeing anaheim. [the engineering firm]. i think my essays were pretty solid, too.

could this make UCLA a viable option for me?

well your EC's are impressive

so you're sure that your UC weighted gpa without freshman year is 3.4?

because that would make UCLA a long shot

it would put UCSD as a match

but on the plus side your SAT scores are really good.

I am sure CSU's don't look at freshman year...but then again they are a purely number based institution, meaning EC's don't have much value.

so UCLA would be a reach...unfortunatley because of their "8 semesters" problem

but you're still in good shape for everthing else...just UCLA is a problem...but not unattainable...those stats are high though...4.17 average weighted GPA

so thats a massive mountain to climb.

=/

yeah. i still wonder whether when they say 'weighted' they mean 5.0 scale or UC weighting system.

i remember looking at their undergrad site, and in terms of admissions, they admitted 10 percent of the applicants with a GPA between 3.6 and 3.89 weighted on a 5.0 scale, if i was not mistaken. i think it was 10-12, too. if that's the case, then i would have more of a chance, though still not quite certain admission.

but yeah. if that 4.17 is UC weighting, i'm quite off of the mark in terms of my own GPA. =(.
