Also what (if anything) can I do to improve my chances

Higher exam scores!
2200 on SAT I and 750s on SAT IIs will significantly improve your chances.

Also what (if anything) can I do to improve my chances

Thanks for the advice. But with my current scores, do you think I will be able to get into at least one??

Maybe USC or UCLA. Essays will make or break you at USC, UCLA just has to be in a giving mood. Definitely focus on those scores.

Also, is that water polo all-American a national title? UCLA loves the water sport elite top athletes. USC might battle for that too. What are your water polo coaches telling you?

I know that our school had a boatload of athletes (specifically Swim, Dive and H2O polo) with similar scores, get into LA and played for the teams.

I think you definitely have a chance at the colleges on your list. This year my D got into USC, Georgetown and UCLA with a 2050 SAT, 4.0 UW, 4.7 W, and had varsity sports and lots of leadership. She also took 5 AP classes for senior yr with a total of 9. At Georgetown, we were a bit surprised that she got in but we are almost 100% sure that the interview was what got her in. They say that the interview can’t help you get in but the person that interviewed my D said that she was her top female interview and she would be reporting that to GT. At UCLA she was considered a Top Applicant (and at UCSB) and got a Likely Letter. At USC she got into the Viterbi school of eng. I really believe that her essays are what pushed her into the ‘yes’ pile with such a competitive group of applicants. I would definitely suggest not trying too hard on the essays to sound like what you think they want to hear. My D wrote everything herself but got lots of people to read them and make suggestions. It was a long process so start early and take your time! Let me know if you have any specific questions…I’d be happy to answer. BTW she chose USC and will be starting this fall:)
