UCs, Stanford??? Please Help!!!!!

I am a white male from a small rural community. My high school has an average of 900 combined on SAT scores and my academic counsler says that will help my relaively low score compared to others...please give me your input:

UC GPA: 4.4
Regular GPA: 4.57
SAT I: 1280 (680 Math, 600 Verbal)
SAT II: 590 (writing) 610 (math iic) 600 (us history)
ACT: 27
I take a rigorous course load, 6 APs by graduation.
-have taken honors courses throughout HS

Over 200 in community service hours
Lettered in Water Polo, many awards for that
Good Essays, from what Im told

What are my chances at:

Stanford
UCB
UCLA
UCD
UCSD

thanks

u have a good chance i guess cuz ur instate to all the uc's stanford is a hella reach though... i don't understand how ur gpa is so good, if ur sat's are only 1280? i think the sat's and act's will hurt, but not as much as u think... good chance at the uc's though*

im telling you, its like that throughout the school, high gpas, low sats, there are only like about 5 kids in my graduating class, if that who have broken 1300, in a class of over 600........

z2thay:

Stanford: Super Reach
UCB: Reach
UCLA: Reach
UCSD: Slight Reach
UCD: Match

Are the classes really easy or something? The thing i would fear if i was u was that the classes are all cake classes. the APs, will factor in. grade-wise, but more ur AP scores.

MY HS GPA was a 4.55 weighted and i got only a 1270 on my SAT. Some people are just not good test takers. On top of that, I barely even studied for that damn test. The SAT doesnt efficiently measure how smart you are. Anyways, i got into UCSD and im from out of state, so i have faith you can into ucsd for sure. Same for UCD. UCB and UCLA are slight reaches though. Consider retaking your SATs and if you score at least 1350, you will have a competitve chance at any UC

i recieved a 4 in micro and a 4 in psych.

anyone????????????please!!!

first of all, you're a complete ass. second i have worked throughout high school, carried an intern position at Washington Mutual Bank, have done over 200 community serivce hours, mostly with Interact, with which I am a representative to the biggest district in the world, i am very distinguished in water polo, with many colleges looking at me, i am well rounded (sorry i dont waste my liufe going to JCs during high school) and lastly, I own my own licnesed business. stanford isnt all about national awards and SATs, i know a number of people of go there with minimum SATs, but who were well rounded and not so arrogant as yourself, i was just looking for reasonable critque, and i dont agree with what you said, i know i may be a bit of a reach, but i think i of a good shot at it.......so go play with yourself

he's not being arrogant, f'd up school or not.

Ah, I don't get some of these threads. You ask people to assess you and when they tell the truth, you get all hurt and offended.

IMHO: Your GPA looks awesome, but your SAT scores (both i and ii) don't show it. UCB looks for high GPA's and at least one strong SAT (either i/ii). It's gonna be tough for you without any strong SAT scores (strong as in 700+). UCLA looks for a high GPA, great ec's, and great SAT ii scores. They can overlook a poor SAT i score if the SAT ii's make up for it. The GPA is important and the SAT ii scores are just about as important, more important than the EC's (as long as you have some). Your EC's are fine, but your SAT scores aren't. Stanford looks for all of those, gpa, sat's, and ec's. You're strong in 2 areas. The majority of their applicants are strong in all three (well, majority of those accepted).

I agree with flopsy:
Stanford: Super Reach
UCB: Reach
UCLA: Reach
UCSD: Slight Reach
UCD: Match

So if you're going to argue about how people assess you, then don't ask. They're just doing what you requested. As they say, "If you can't handle the heat, get out of the kitchen."

perhaps ur school is easy? is it an 800+ school on the california standardized testing?

While I think AtStanford could have handled this with more...tact...I must agree with his overall point. I don't think Stanford is TOTALLY out of the question, but you've got to be reasonable here. It's one of the best schools in the country and often outranks some of the Ivy League schools. They can basically afford to let in whoever they want for whatever reason they want. This could be you, and it might not be. But don't say no one warned you.

As for the UCs, I think you're probably fine. Might try and retake some of those tests, hit a 1300 or so. I'm personally wondering about the quality of your school, no offense. I mean, usually, when someone has a GPA as high as yours, they also have a 1400+ SAT to match. Something doesn't jive here, and it will stick out like a sore thumb. Most likely, they'll assume that the school grades too easy or something.

Like atreeyum said, some UCs look at one thing over another (SATs over GPA, or vice versa). For this reason, you stand a good chance at most of the UCs. But Stanford will look at EVERYTHING. And your SAT score is an easy and convenient excuse to reject you.

z2thay... sorry to say it, but chances look bleak for stanford, but then again, im guessing that your regional applicant pool wont be as competetive as somewhere else, so maybe theyll let you in bc you're allegedly one of the top at your school & region. Your grades are excellent, which just discredits them compared to the pretty low SATs. (honestly a 680 and 600 isnt even that bad, but you shouldnt be getting them with your gpa). i'd still like to see if you get in or not when it finally comes down to it. are you a junior or senior?

sorry for the ignorance, but what does the SD in UCSD stand for?

UC san diego

that makes sense...

AtStanford,

Even if you're a student there you don't have to completely crush someones dreams by saying they have "NO CHANCE". I would think such a prestigious and intellectual individual as yourself would atleast have the decency to not completely discourage someone from atleast applying. Yes, his chances do not look so good, but you cannot make the decision that he has 'NO CHANCE' even if you're a student there; it's rather immature to assert this without a little encouragement, Mr. Stanford.

Where did tha super long post by Atstanford go?
What about the thread he put up?

I guess the mods took it down.
I thought the guy was funny as hell, but yes a little on the rough side.

I would have wanted to see what more people said about it.

about the OP looks like im going to have to join bandwagon,(stay calm)

GPA to sat ratio just doesn't seem right

since avg. admit rate is 13%

I'll give u a 7% chance of getting in.
75% at ucla and berk

I want to see that super long message by atstanford again, anyone have it,save it.

I can't say I really understand sat scores, but...on inflated gpa's I do have an opinion. There are so many high gpa's I don't get it. I said before that my dd's school has only has 4 ppl in it's history, since the 1920's who have got 4.0 for 8 semesters. It is almost impossible to get 4.0 in any one semester.

If you look at UC admit rates, gpa is really high and sat is really low, so our OP is right in with the best of them. If you look at private schools, sat is much higher and gpa is same or lower. So the quality of your school is important, except to the extend that it is a factor beyond your control, so what did you do with it?
