My student received an invitation today to a reception. Is this a guarantee of admittance? Also are they notified of an honors program for them?
I got the same in the mail today! Don’t know the answer to your questions but hope someone else will have more info.
See this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-santa-barbara/1857513-chancellors-reception-invite-p1.html
Thnx!
Do they only send these out to California students?
@Merppity I don’t think so, as they do host some conferences outside of the state of California, such as in New York.
Did any CCS applicants get chancellor invite?
If I did not receive one, does it mean I didn’t get in? My friend with lower stats than me received one and I am so worried
UCSB does not send out acceptances until March, so if you did not receive an invite, this just means you are not being considered for the Honors or Regents.
From the UCSB website::
What is the purpose of the UCSB Chancellor’s Receptions?
The receptions provide you and your family with the opportunity to meet UCSB faculty, staff and alumni who will introduce you to opportunities on campus. Our goal is to inform you about the excellent opportunities for academic, personal and professional growth at UCSB so that you can make an informed college choice.
Does this mean I have been admitted? Who was invited to the reception?
Your invitation does not indicate that you have been admitted. However, invitations were only sent to our highest achieving applicants in select regions.
^^“In select regions”. Does that mean the invites were limited to those in the areas surrounding the reception sites?
Is there a reception at UCSB? I haven’t seen anyone post about local invites, but the population is much smaller than that of LA or the Bay Area.
@calmom2016: I just copied this off the UCSB website. It did not specify which are the “select regions”. Previous OOS receptions have been held in Washington DC, Seattle Washington and New York City.
@Ynotgo - It doesn’t look like there is a reception at UCSB. We are local-ish (Vta), but I’m not sure how DS would be looked at in a “holisitic” approach, so that fact that he hasn’t received one certainly isn’t any proof that locals were not invited!
For what it is worth, our son (who lived in Santa Barbara) applied to colleges two years ago, and he was offered a Regents Scholarship but was not invited to the Chancellor’s reception.
I also got one. Does it hurt admissions if you cannot attend?
@kuidaore Nope It is just a way to gain information if you attend and maybe learn your decision early
It does mean that you’ve been accepted. I was invited in 2014 and during the reception, they announce that we’ve all been accepted.
OK So I asked my brother who had the exact same stats as me about it. He was accepted to honors college (major Biology) last year and didn’t end up going to the event. However, he did say that not everyone invited was accepted into the honors college, based on his friends who also got the invite. Hope this is as helpful to others as it is to me.
@jackisawesome Does your brother remember when the portal updated? I received my letter today but was wondering if the portal would update around the first event, or later, with other applicants.
I am pretty sure the portal only updates on the day it is meant to for all applicants. He said he didn’t know, so this is solely a guess
