UCSB Chances of Admission? (Anthro major)

So I'm planning on transferring to UCSB from Pasadena City College (PCC) as a Cultural Anthro major with...

GPA: 3.89 [will probably go up to a 3.9-ish by the end of fall]
Not a lot of ECs but I did have a job for most of my time at CC and two internships
I'm a good writer and my personal statements will in all likelihood be pretty strong (if they don't turn out to be my strongest asset.)
I will complete the IGETC by Spring; have completed 60 units and pre-reqs just fine (with probably a 4.0 major GPA), etc.
I applied to TAG but I didn't have 30 units by fall (because they wouldn't count AP units) and I've changed my "planned" courses, withdrawn from a previously "planned" course, so I'm really not counting on the TAG at all. But that's OK. I think?

The biggest problem I can foresee for my app is that: I've heard UCSB is really strict on completing English and Math pre-reqs by Fall, before Spring. I will have completed English reqs but NOT Math. I'm signed up for Stats for Spring.

But that's not the whole story either. I took a (non transferable) Math course freshman year and ended up with a C (it was a Stats prereq). Then I took a Stats Course this Fall but ended up dropping with a "W." So I haven't had the greatest Math experience. How badly will this affect my chances?

I will find it ridiculous if a school like UCLA or UCSD or even UCB (however unlikely they may be) accepts me and UCSB (which is the only school I really want to go to) doesn't.

What are my chances? Help me out, thank you!

Your chances at UCSB are pretty much 0% if you haven’t completed stats yet. That being said, your chances at every other UC are pretty dang good considering how easy it is to get into Anthro. Call someone from UCSB and ask them. Good luck.

Wow that’s rough. But thank you so much for the reply! Pretty much confirmed my suspicions. I’ll make sure to try to get a hold of an SB representative, in any case, definitely.

Has anybody else gone through a similar situation? I’m sure there have been plenty of UCSB applicants before who didn’t know about the Finish-Math-by-Fall situation. Had I know, I would’ve done things differently. It’s crazy.

Has anyone gone through this and lived to tell the tale, i.e. gotten admitted into SB, or appealed or whatever? I’m fairly sure I’ll get straight A’s this fall; I mean, will they really not count that at all? Thanks for anyone who answers~

I’ll have to agree with Snorlaz. You’re in a strange position where you’ll probably be admitted to UCLA and UC Berkeley(Especially with Berkeley since they love ECs and yours are pretty good, even if you don’t think they are.) but denied by UCSB. lol

For what it’s worth, I’ve heard that UCSB has accepted some applicants who didn’t complete their English/Math requirement by the end of Fall but they may have been the exception to the rule.

Exactly what I was thinking Cayton. OP will likely be admitted into UCB and UCLA but not UCSB.

OP, this is all speculation on my part but I’ve seen many posts recently that explicitly stated UCSB will not admit transfer students if they haven’t finished the math portion of IGETC by the end of fall. It’s a lame rule but thankfully they are the only UC I know of that auto-rejects because of this. It’s nice seeing another Anthro major on here applying this cycle.

If you are not admitted to UCSB then appeal their decision once you pass Math in the spring. Pretty simple process and you will have a strong case once you pass Stats with a “C” or better.

I am in a very similar situation. I already applied to UCLA UCB UCSD UCR and UCI. I really want to apply to UCSB but that whole math done by fall thing really has me scared to do it. I took Intermediate Algebra twice last spring and this fall and dropped with Ws. Now I have to take it during winter. I am signed up for required math for spring. I am scared I will be rejected despite having a 3.82 GPA for History. Im still not 100% sure I should apply to UCSB. If anything tho do as poster above said and appeal. I might end up having to do that to any school I apply to, since I am very likely to get rejected because of Ws and spring math imo.

Hey just wanted to let folks know that I ended up being admitted!

Congratulations! So what makes you choose UCSB over other schools like UCLA and Cal?

Hey I was reading this thread, and it is very similar to the situation I am in. I would love some advice and feedback from your experience. I applied for fall 2015 to UCSB, UCB, UCLA, AND UCSD. I have not heard back from anyone except UCSB. I got rejected , I had a 3.71 GPA. My highest goal is getting into ucla, ever since i found out that i got rejected from ucsb it has been so tough for me because I thought that would be the easiest school to get into, and now i am losing all hope for UCLA. I find out in a week or so for all the other schools, what are your thoughts?
