UCSB class of 2023

@gumbymom So does my kid get in now that we’re honest and didn’t pay someone 500K to cheat on tests and pretend to play a sport? My kid did Varsity Tennis 4 (Coteamcaption) years, Band 4 years (Section Leader) AP courses. So far not a single UC acceptance. Really tough to tell your kid to Try hard and keep trying hard when you can’t get into one of the schools in your own state. I’m planning to see about a Loan tomorrow at the Bank to Build a Bldging at one of the schools perhaps then she’ll get it.

@NosyCaliparent, none of UCs looks at grades at freshman year. Each UC makes the admission decision independently. There is no correlation between each individual UC campus.

Wondering why State of CA DOE even has grades for 9th grade public high schools. Make them P/NP. Better yet, go to a 100 point scale, as UCs don’t give one credit for an 89.4% B+ over an 80.5% B-.

@Vibes4me: I understand your anger and I am sure your post is the result of that anger, but just so you know that i am parent volunteer with no connection to the UC’s or UC admissions. All our kids work hard and deserve better. I can only say I hope this scandal brings to light the many issues involved in the college admissions and will result in some action to be taken to change things for the better.

The wealthy have been making charitable donations to universities and elite colleges for centuries. In some cases, it would appear there is a connection and in others it’s bona fide philanthropy. We certainly wouldn’t want to see $2B endowments drop in annual receipts.

@NosyCaliparent solid advice from everyone who responded to you so I won’t repeat what they said. FWIW my CS major kid had a C one semester in 10th grade (in PreCalc no less, he was going thru some very hard family issues that semester) and he got into UCB, UCSB and UCD, but waitlisted for UCI and UCSD. So the admissions process can be a bit randomish.

@Gumbymom AMen… Amen…

@ProfessorPlum168 thank you for the encouragement. My son is also CS would like to go to UCSB or UCSD. Where did you S/D end up if you don’t mind me asking and how does he/she enjoy it?

@NosyCaliparent my kid is at Berkeley. He’s going thru the L&S route for CS which involves a lot of work to get thru the 3 CS classes with a minimum 3.3 GPA in order to declare. But he seems to be pretty happy there nevertheless since he apparently still has time to be on an intramural football team.

@NosyCaliparent I got a C in math Sophomore year and recently got into UC Davis and Cal Poly Slo for Engineering. Getting a C doesn’t mean you’ll get rejected.

Did everyone get the email from UCSB with the subject “You’re invited to our virtual open house”

When did the email arrive?

@b4four I got mine at 12:38 PM (PT).

Got it. Also got the invite to the Chancellor’s reception but couldn’t attend, so really hoping this means she’s really in…the waiting is so tough. At least we’re all in it together, right?!
