Hi, My name is Trevor, and im an out-of stater ( NY) who got into UCSB Fall 06. Even though UCSB is known as a "party school", does the school still have an intellectual atmosphere? Are the majority of students there just looking to party or can you still have fun with intelligent people without getting drunk/ going to bars et cetera.

Also, i was going to double Major in Philosophy/Political science ; also thinking about Psychology. Just wondering if anybody has any opinions as to the strengths of those particular areas at UCSB.

One last thing- how are the dorms at UCSB- spacious/ normal; are they all within 5-10 minutes of the main campus? I visited the school earlier i just cant remember. Also, is there any way to narrow down the type of person you want to room with- i.e.-Night Owl, Not a morning person etccc; a questionare whatever; or do they just group you with whoever?

You wont do well if all you're looking to do is party. Most of the time people figure out how to balance the partying and the studying. Those that have too much fun say "bye-bye SB" after a couple of quarters. Even moreso, partying gets boring after awhile. There is still a grip of the intellectual type here, it's just that you hear more about the parties.

All dorms are on campus except for FT, which is about a 5 min bike ride from campus.

When you apply for housing you complete the questionnaire for a preferred roomie. Don't be surprised if it isn't too accurate. I applied for a clean, quiet, non-smoking roommate my first year -- well, let's just say he turned out to be the opposite.
