UCSB OOS with a 3.4?

I am looking to get into University of California Santa Barbara for the 2014 Fall semester.

ACADEMICS:
I have a 3.43 GPA for my Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior year of high school. I just took the ACT and received a 28 Composite score with a 26 in English/Writing. I have heard that UCSB only looks at Sophomore and Junior year GPA average. If this is so, I would have closer to a 3.2 GPA. I am also White so my ethnicity doesn't factor in too much. I am also from Maryland so I am an Out of State applicant.

EXTRACURRICULARS:
As far as extracurriculars go, I am a member of my school's Varsity Swim Team (going on four years), Captain of the Frisbee team, as well as a member of the Guitar Ensemble. I actively write music and I am forming a band. I will graduate my school with a minimum of 60 service hours but more likely around 110 hours. I am an active downhill skateboarder that has traveled around the country to events. I have also taught many people how to skateboard. I have been a volunteer with the Patuxent Riverkeeper since 2011 and I am active in many environmental groups such as the Sierra Club.

I am interested in Business Management as well as Music.

Overall:
Fresh,Soph,Junior GPA- 3.43
Soph,Junior GPA- 3.2
ACT Composite- 28
ACT Eng/Writing-26
Extracurriculars- Listed above

I’m not sure about the exact requirements for getting in, especially since they probably changed in the last 5 years. But I am a UCSB alumnus, admitted in 08 and graduated last year. Is that your weighted GPA or unweighted? Have you taken any honors/AP courses/AP tests? Did you take the SAT or just ACT?
Here is what got me in:
4.2 GPA (W) (I forget what it was UW, probably around 3.7ish?)
2000 SAT (680 math, 610 reading, 710 writing)
ACT composite - 28
ACT writing - 27
Extracurriculars - also varsity swimming sophomore-senior year, soccer freshman year, newspaper editor, lots of community service, salsa club.
What really helped me get in I think were my essays. Make sure you write really compelling personal statements (for my app there were two different essays but there might only be one now). Your extracurriculars and test scores are good, and your grades might be good enough, but like I said, the essay goes a long way.

Good luck! UCSB is a great school, I loved my time there.

sure it’s possible, but why you would waste all that money on a mid-tier public is beyond me.

I wouldn’t call it a mid tier public, it is one of the top public universities in the country and it is a great school with some amazing professors.

the 3.4 is my Unweighted GPA. I have not taken any AP or Honors courses but I am signed up for AP Computer Science next year. I have heard that colleges look for an advancement in difficulty of courses in a students curriculum from year to year. Each year my courses have increased in difficulty so I think this could help me.
