So I'll try and make this quick and easy, i just got into UCSB off of the waitlist and now i'm in a huge predicament. I already committed to Cal Poly, and had my mind set on it.

Now, i need to make the decision between going to UCSB or Cal Poly and it's stressing me out like crazy.

I loved the cal poly campus and area when i visited, and from people i've talked to it seems like it really is a respected school. But UCSB is UCSB and has that "uc" name attached to it. Also Isla Vista is a huuuge plus for me. I am really leaning towards cal poly, but i dont want to make the wrong choice and choose a state school over a uc. I know, those stupid labels are affecting my decision..but status is a huge part about what school you go to unfortunately.

I am in business at cal poly, but i think im going to switch into econ because i want to get an mba after college. I also got into pre-econ at ucsb. So here comes the first question: Which econ degree do you think would be better? help me get a job out of college? more money? get into a respected mba program? etc

My second question is: Which should i choose?? I'm in such a dilemma and i dont wanna make the wrong choice. I was looking at us news ranking and didn't even see cal poly on the list, but did see ucsb (which worries me even more).

I'm just trying to get some opinions, so anything will be greatly appreciated. I'll be posting this in the cal poly forum also. Any info on the comparisons between party life, academics, ranking, town, etc is also appreciated.

If you wanna do business, cal poly because it has a better undergrad business program.
But if you were to choose not based on that, then def UCSB =D.

well, technially UCSB doesn’t even have a business major… so for undergrad I would just go with the one you like. If you like SLO more than UCSB than go there ! it’ll be cheaper too. have you visited UCSB ?

Well i think I’m gonna do econ so i can get an mba later, and ucsb has econ too, which causes the problem haha. i dont think that the econ department is part of the business school at slo.

and yea i think i do like slo more, but i feel like an idiot if i pass up the world famous ucsb party scene. yea, i visited ucsb for like a day, and didnt really like the campus. The water is nice, but the campus didnt feel like me at all.

Yea thats what i feel like also, except i might switch into econ to help my chances of later getting an mba after enough work experience. But i’ve also just heard that a undergrad business degree wont put me at that much of a disadvantage, and that work experience is really important. In which case i feel like cal poly might be the right choice, since their job placement is so good.

How do ucsb graduates do? Easy to find jobs? avg salary for economics graduate from ucsb?

For accounting if you have a 3.3 GPA or above you will leave college with a job (through campus recruitment) if you go to UCSB. You will still find jobs if your GPA is lower, except you need to search a little more. I am sure economics majors do well too, come on now you won’t find a difference in job placements from Cal Poly vs. UCSB. Based on my experience there were just as many students representing UCSB as Cal Poly for summer internships.

The reason I said go to Cal poly for Business administration is because if you choose not to do accounting, you will have other options such as finance, marketing or MIS. I strongly recommend UCSB if you are sure about either Accounting or economics.

Again, the above statements are strictly based on academic interests. I recommend that you go where you would be happier. Don’t worry about prestige or job placements, especially in this case because both schools are good.

I personally couldn’t stand Cal Poly SLO because of the demographics are mostly filled with conservative white Christian people. Not bad people, but I’ve had enough of them in my old town. The typical college is often more diverse and liberal. Also, Cal Poly doesn’t seem to focus too much on the liberal arts, which I feel like is hugely important to your education simply for your betterment as a person.

Yea, I really don’t know if I want to do economics, and deff not accounting. I’m just thinking about my future, and possibility of getting an MBA. In all honesty I would much rather prefer major in finance.

And WCF I know where your coming from considering that I’m agnostic and very liberal, but I got a better college feel from slo.

And Mancini I have don a TON of research haha, and it’s honestly 50/50 on ppl saying which school is better for diff reasons. And If I don’t really like economics, the only thing I would like about ucsb is the partying. So it’s tough for me.

Obviously you’re going to get ABOUT 50/50 if you are posting in the Poly and SB forums because you’re getting biased answers from both of them. A better way would be to ask some people who actually know about colleges, and who would not have a bias to sway you into going to one of the schools ur debating going to. The SB and POLY forums are not the place for this.

Also: Have these people even considered the fact that you’re not 100% sure what u want to major in? Have YOU considered this? If u go to poly, it will be difficult to switch your major if u do decide to switch to finance in the middle of ur sophomore year, or whenever. Also you say you want a MBA (though, it doesn’t sound like you’re sure of anything, so this may be just an thought of yours, IDK) and sb would better prepare you for going on to grad school.

Finance is the worst of your three choices, seriously almost know jobs and depends strictly on economy. Accounting would be your safest bet, unless you believe you can definitely get into an MBA program.

This is old as **** but I have to know.
Which one did you choose man? How did you feel about your choice?
I’m in the same situation Cal Poly or UCSB.
