UCSB, UCSD, or Michigan State University for comm major

Hi everyone I’m a high school senior and got accepted into UCSB and UCSD for Comm major, and Michigan State University for Media and information. It’s really hard for me to decide which school to go to as each of them has its own amazing feature. In terms of courses, I’ve learned that UC schools generally emphasize more on theory and analysis whereas MSU provides classes with more practical projects. As a hands-on person, I’m leaning toward MSU in this aspect. However, UCSB’s Lifestyle really attracts me and that it also has a high reputation in comm major as well as UCSD. Also, studying at UCSD may indicate more internships as it is located in a big city. I’m not sure about connections with Alum of all the three schools, does anyone know? Also, I’d love to hear any insights about the comm major of all three schools! Furthermore, I’m interested in learning about Honors college or honors program. Thanks a ton!!

Michigan State’s journalism/comm arts program is one of the oldest and best. It is both hands on but also strongly research and theory based with such institutions as the Quello Center. Facilities are top notch. From the MSU, CommArts website:

In the most recent report from the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC), the accreditation team noted that ComArtSci’s School of Journalism “is in that select group of premier programs today” and that it is doing a “marvelous job of preparing students for the digital age.”

How do cost and debt for each school compare?

Do you mean in terms of resources and courses, I’ll learn more practical skills from MSU rather than UCSB or UCSD?

How do you intend to pay for going out of state? The federal loan limit for a 4 year degree is $27k. The rest comes out of your parent’s pocket. It won’t matter how prestigious the school is if you can’t pay for it.
