So, I know i'm probably going to get shot down but, I'm asking this on behalf of a friend. He was recently accepted to both UCSB and UC Davis for a PhD program in Chemical Engineering. However, He want's to emphasize more so in BioChemE so my question is, which of these do you think would be best? Is there a really big difference in rankings and job outlook? Any insight would be appriciated, thanks!

Definitely UCSB. I went to UC Davis as an undergraduate in biochemical engineering, and while I thought the program was strong everyone I talked to knows the chemical engineering program at UCSB is one of the best in the nation. Depending on what he wants to specialize, the biology part of the biochemical engineering program might not be worth it. I’ve seen several bioengineer who started as an undergraduate in biochemical engineering but end up getting a phD in chemical engineering, and I’m pretty sure there is a strong correlation between rank and job outlook.
