UCSC OR UCSD??

UCSC or UCSD for astronomy/astrophysics?

UCSD is viewed as more prestigious by most people, but if possible, you should visit both campuses to see which one you like more! :)

@flora903 Yes but UCSC is top 6 for astrophysics/astronomy and top 2 for research impact. UCSD is not even known for astronomy, but UCSC has this awesome reputation for it.

Not sure should I go to UCSD because it is prestigious or UCSC because it is great for my major

Dude, UCSD is like #1 UC for sciences, go with astrophysics @ UCSD. I feel like astronomy is more of a for-enjoyment study. (minor or double major in Astronomy)

@Sustenance: really?? but UCSC is top 6 for astrophysics in the world (right behind UChicago and beats Cornell) , while ucsd is not even ranked

Eh, then that’s quite the dilemma, I’d look up internship/grad school stuff, because with astrophysics, don’t you need a master’s? I could be wrong, that’s just what I’ve gathered. and UCSD is very recognizable for all their sciences, I think chem and bio being the top two. Your call, the UCSC campus is definitely better in my opinion, I’ve seen UCSD and eh, it’s like not unified, there’s 6 campuses as you know. Not that that’s a huge factor, but if what you’re saying is 100% true (could be disputed) then wow. All in all both are great schools and I’m sure it won’t make a huge difference outcome wise.

Go to UCSD as undergrad and UCSC as grad.

USCS is known world wide for their astrophysics department. Check both websites of the dept and see how many faculty they have in the major at both schools. Also look at where the faculty at many of the UC campuses went to school for their major for undergrad/masters/phD. That will give you the best info.
