UCSC Transfer Denial

Hello all. I applied to UCSC as a transfer for Fall 2021. A little background info about me… I went to UIUC for two years and completed Micro and Macro Econ there with grades of C in both. In short, I came back to CCC (california community college) and retook Macro and Micro Econ and got A in both classes.

I received my rejection letter recently and asked the admission evaluator as to why I was denied admission. Her reasoning was that because I took Micro and Macro at UIUC and received C’s (GPA 2.0), I didn’t meet the minimum 2.8 major required GPA.

My question is why wouldn’t they look at my Ohlone College grades. I feel like they are punishing me for those two C’s. And in this case, based on what the evaluator said, I will never have a chance at admission due to those two grades. I definitely plan on submitting an appeal. Any replies are appreciated and may give me a piece of mind. Thank y’all!

Sorry to hear that! I’m also appealing. I believe that you can only have a course repeat / replace a grade if you received a D or F in that course, if you passed then you can’t replace the grade from my understanding, but someone else should chime in. I’ve never been allowed to retake a course at a CCC if I’ve passed it previously. If that’s the case, you may want to focus the appeal on a different issue

hey! thanks for the reply. the thing is my counselor at CC never told me I couldn’t repeat the course. If she would’ve said something I would’ve applied for a different major… I get that a grade of C is passing but don’t you think it’s unfair that UCSC is punishing based on the fact that I want to better myself and the grades?

Oh I don’t think it’s UCSC trying to punish you, it’s in the state CCC code, attached here: https://www.cccco.edu/-/media/CCCCO-Website/About-Us/Divisions/Educational-Services-and-Support/Academic-Affairs/What-we-do/Curriculum-and-Instruction-Unit/Files/CreditCourseRepetitionGuidelinesFinal070513_pdf.pdf?la=en&hash=EE068026FD6063B32ED1ADA14298575AA0F5AB66

“The general rule is that district policy may not permit a student to enroll again in a credit course
(also referred to as repeating or re-enrolling in a credit course) if the student received a
satisfactory grade on the previous enrollment.” So you weren’t supposed to be allowed to take the course again to avoid these types of conflicts, but their system may not check your UIUC transcript automatically if it’s on file so it won’t prevent you from enrolling in that course when it should. They’re just holding you to the same standard that the rest of us are. I got 2 Cs in 5 unit courses a while ago I wish I could repeat but can’t, if I did take them at a different CC, UCSC would say the same thing to me, just saying it’s not personal.

However, look at page 8 of that link, there are exceptions:
"There are a few exceptions to the general rule that permit districts to adopt policies which allow
a student receiving a satisfactory grade to enroll in the same credit course again. (See,
§ 55040(b), and see Appendix B - table 1.) Those exceptions to the general rule are set forth in
more detail later in these Guidelines, but include the following:
• courses properly designated by a district as repeatable,
• a subsequent enrollment due to significant lapse of time,
• variable unit courses offered on an open-entry/open-exit basis,
• extenuating circumstances,
• occupational work experience courses,
• students with disabilities repeating a special class,
• legally mandated courses, and
• courses necessary as a result of significant change in industry or licensure standards. "

I would write your appeal based on one of these exceptions, and quote the actual code. Make a legal argument for why your course repeats in California must be considered in your GPA.

Actually, you should send your CCC transcripts to UIUC right away, and tell them that a significant lapse of time has occurred since you received those two C’s, and if they replace the grade on your transcript, attach those unofficial updated transcripts to your appeal, then UCSC has to accept your GPA update.

Good luck!

I just added an amendment to my message, please read: " Actually, you should send your CCC transcripts to UIUC right away, and tell them that a significant lapse of time has occurred since you received those two C’s, and if they replace the grade on your transcript, attach those unofficial updated transcripts to your appeal, then UCSC has to accept your GPA update."

I think that would help you a ton!

did you go to Mission?

no i didn’t

This isn’t going to help on your appeal, but in the event you don’t have a 4-year college to attend next year then there is potentially some wiggle room based on the UCSC website

The following courses or their equivalents are required prior to transfer, by the end of the spring term for students planning to enter in the fall:
…omitted…

A minimum GPA of 2.8 must be obtained in the courses listed above. The admissions office screens transfer applicants for meeting major qualification criteria.

Prospective students are encouraged to prioritize required and recommended major preparation, and may additionally complete courses that articulate to UC Santa Cruz general education requirements as time allows.

https://catalog.ucsc.edu/en/Current/General-Catalog/Academic-Units/Social-Sciences-Division/Economics/Economics-BA#tasp

The wiggle would be whether the optional recommended Econ courses would be part of the gpa calculation, or if it is just the courses specifically listed. If the optional courses can be included then you can raise your gpa for the rule by taking them. I don’t know if this is allowed, you’d need to check with UCSC. It may be a longshot, but as the great Gretsky said ‘You Miss 100% Of The Shots You Don’t Take.’
