Hi, I’ve been admitted as an undeclared engineering major at UCSC and as a mathematics major at Cal Poly. The only engineering majors at UCSC that interest me are Electrical Engineering & Engineering Robotics. At Cal Poly there are many more majors I am interested in, such as my first choice, Aerospace Engineering. I’ve also been considering grad school, so I’d like to leave that as an option for the future. Anyways, how does Cal Poly’s engineering pair up against UCSC?
CPSLO’s policies on changing into engineering majors from outside of engineering are here:

At UCSC, it looks like declaring electrical engineering requires a 2.8 prerequisite GPA:

Up front, know I am biased. My son goes to Cal Poly.
Now that is out of the way, why didn’t you apply to Aerospace at Poly in the first place if that was your interest? Have you visited both schools and toured both engineering facilities? That will tell you a lot. How did you decide on those two final schools (i.e. what do you like in each of them?)?
If you plan on trying to switch at Poly, look carefully at the link @ucbalumnus posted and in particular the sublinks for each major. You will be blocked into your first term courses (they will pick your classes). Let your advisor know as soon as you get there, ideally during WOW, that you want to switch into CENG. That way they can tailor your schedule to satisfy both the math and engineering flowcharts. Keep your grades up. Both ME and Aero require a 2.75 minimum overall GPA and a 2.75 minimum GPA in prerequisite classes. CENG is the largest exporter of majors at Poly, so spaces open up. ME and Aero are coveted and competitive though. Major changes aren’t guaranteed.
@eyemgh Thank you for your input! I didn’t apply in the first place since I was scared of being rejected since Poly’s engineering is so competitive and wouldn’t mind studying math (my second passion). With that being said I still think I would do fine handling Poly’s engineering. (IMO my application is a poor reflection of myself as a student, granted I had a very strong upward trend in grades and school involvement). I have only toured the engineering facilities at UCSC, they are a bit small IMO, and I wish they offered more majors. However, I love the fact that a lot of the students are involved in research with professors and graduate students.
I have not visited Cal Poly but plan to during late April.
I am fairly confident I will be able to get a GPA above 3.3. I will email a Cal Poly represented and see what my options are.
It seems as if Cal Poly is the way to go for engineering but my next hurdle is transferring over.
Thank you for the feedback by the way, it is very much appreciated!
@negligiblemass, you’ll know which is right for you once you have visited both. As for major change at Poly, read the document @ucbalumnus posted. It gives all the information you need, at least for now. If you decide Poly is right for you, then start down the path of major change. You can’t get the ball rolling now anyway. Just make sure you’re blocked into classes that will work for both. Good luck.
